We are seeking designers practicing in Australia with:
5+ years’ professional experience
current use of GenAI in creative design work
You may use standalone programs like Midjourney or ChatGPT, specialised design software with embedded GenAI, like Autodesk Fusion 360 or Adobe Firefly, or something else from the ever growing plethora of standalone or embedded workspace apps available to assist creative design work.
You may use these for idea generation, user research, project representation, or anything that supports the design process. Please refer to Figure 1 for other common design process activities and methods GenAI might be used for, noting that you may use it for something that is not listed, which is of interest to this research study.
Essentially, if you use GenAI regularly (i.e., usually once a week, in some way) for creative design, we would like to hear from you!
Taking part in this study is voluntary and will involve two parts: (1) a survey, and (2) an interview.
If you decide to participate in this study, you will be invited to complete:
(1) a short survey, repeated weekly for eight weeks, of approximately 5 minutes duration each week – to understand change in use
(2) an interview of approximately 1 hour duration – to understand your ideas about use
The combined time investment is less than 2 hours in total.
All components will be conducted online and are designed with busy people in mind.
This study has been approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) of The University of Sydney.
The data collected will be de-identified prior to being analysed as group data, ensuring your privacy and confidentiality.
The findings will be examined to write a dissertation, an academic journal article and potentially a conference presentation.

The Participant Information Statement (PIS) provides more detail about participating, including privacy and data handling.
