The Double Diamond model can be elaborated into a framework for mapping GenAI in the design process by: (1) phases, (2) activities, and (3) methods.
A tiered design process framework that includes design methods, the procedures designers use to undertake design tasks, allows us to explore how GenAI tools are applied. This is because design methods externalise the thinking of designers, demonstrating crucial procedural knowledge (Daalhuizen & Cash, 2021) that otherwise might remain hidden in design activities. For example, idea generation is a common design process activity, but it is the method the designer uses, such as brainstorming, that reveals the creative focus of this activity.
Therefore, in this study, we use a framework that includes design methods, as shown below in Figure 1. While this does not capture all potential intersections of GenAI with the design process or those that may be specific to design disciplines, it does provide a common framework relevant to GenAI. We will use this as the basis to map and explore how GenAI tools are used in creative design tasks and shape the design process.
