August 28 - ADD at KAIST Centrifuge Center

• The Agency for Defense Development visited our centrifuge center. Dr. Ko introduced the center and the principles of centrifuge modeling, followed by a discussion on potential research collaboration. Thank you for visiting us!

August 26-28 - 2026 GEHL Summer MT in 무주

August 25 - End of Summer Study Program

• GEHL completed its seven-week summer study program! We divided into three groups, each focusing on PM4Sand, MASW, and Uncertainty Quantification. All members actively participated throughout the program and successfully achieved the goals they had set. It was a productive summer, and we are proud of our team!

July 10 - Joined the Editorial Board of IJPMG

• I am pleased to share that I have joined the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Physical Modelling in Geotechnics.

IJPMG is an international journal associated with Technical Committee TC104 of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). The journal focuses on research in physical modeling in geotechnical engineering, including centrifuge modeling, 1g modeling, and shaking table testing.

As physical modelling has been an important part of my research, I look forward to contributing to the journal and supporting high-quality research in this field.

July 9 - Welcoming Zayed University Leadership 

It was a pleasure to welcome the President and Vice President of Zayed University to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at KAIST.

During their visit, we had a productive discussion on potential research collaboration and future academic exchange between our institutions. We also had the opportunity to introduce our research activities and provide a tour of the KOCED Geotechnical Centrifuge Center, where we shared our experimental capabilities for geotechnical and earthquake engineering research.

July 6 - Welcome new members!

• We are happy to welcome Dr. Seo and Changsung Lim to GEHL. We have also launched a group study to make this summer both productive and meaningful.

July 3 - Meeting with Professor Onder Cetin

• It was a great pleasure to meet and have dinner with Professor Onder Cetin. We discussed many interesting fundamentals of liquefaction, particularly how liquefaction can be interpreted from a strain-based perspective. 

June 29 - IAEA meeting and invited seminar

• It was great to give a presentation at IAEA meeting. The meeting was for External Events Safety Section (EEES) of IAEA. I gave a talk about how to identify the timing of liquefaction using ground motion records. 

June 15-19 - ICSMGE in Vienna

• It was great to catch up with friends and colleagues at ICSMGE. I also gave a presentation entitled "Crack Propagation Mechanisms in Dams and Levees Caused by Vertical Offsets in the Foundation" at the TC210 Committee Meeting. This work is a collaborative research effort involving UC Davis, Auburn University, and the California Department of Water Resources (DWR). Terzaghi Archieve tour in TU Wein was so impressive!

June 8-12 - ICPMG in Zurich

• It was great to catch up with friends and colleagues at ICPMG. I also had the opportunity to chair a session on onshore and offshore foundations. In addition, Mark gave a presentation on the scaling laws for fluids in centrifuge modeling, a topic we have worked on together.
