The OCDSB invites all grade 12 French students (CORE & IMMERSION who are enrolled in a FIF or FSF 4U course) to take the DELF test.
Most, if not all, students at Glebe will know about the DELF test and are becoming familiar with terminology and the format of the test. But, you are probably asking yourself, what is the DELF test? Why would my son/daughter take the test?
I will try my best to answers those questions, here on my website, but if you still have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
The Ontario Ministry of Education released a French Curriculum in September 2014 and along with this came a change to the teacher' teaching and the students learning of French both the Core and Immersion levels. Essentially, we are moving from content based approach to a skills based approach.
The DELF (Diplôme d'études en langue française) exam is internationally recognised and evaluates a person's level of bilingualism.
DELF is broken down into LEVELS: A1, A2 - B1, B2 - C1, C2 and into COMPETENCIES (all of equal value - 25 pts):
Production Orale (PO) - Speaking
Production Écrite (PÉ) - Writing
Compréhension Orale (CO) - Listening
Compréhension Écrite (CÉ) - Reading
Our Core French students, in grade 9, are typically working at level A2, leading onto level B1 in grade 10, 11 and 12. The differences between the levels are shown in the Assessment document below.
Our Immersion students, in grade 9, are typically working at level B1 and most if not all working at level B2 by grade 12. Again, the differences between the levels are shown in the Assessment document below. Please understand as well, that there is a MASSIVE difference between levels B1 and B2, not only in the mastery of the language, but also in the learners general knowledge.
The Self -Assessment Form allows students to assess their skills (Speaking, Reading, Listening and Writing) and gives them an idea of which level they are working at. PLEASE keep in mind, that the idea behind the levels is that learners are constantly improving their skills and that not all 4 skills may be at the same level of competency. Also, the advancement from one level to another may take several years, especially for student in Core French. Typically, for example, the B1 level, can take up to 3 years to achieve at a high level of competency.
