LGBTQ+ Focus
One of the first MTV scripted series to feature recurring gay, lesbian, and bisexual characters in main storylines throughout its entire run.
When Undressed premiered in 1999, it was MTV’s first late-night drama to focus explicitly on young adults talking about sex with candor and humor. It mixed soap-opera drama with dialogue-driven vignettes about dating, coming out, identity, and intimacy. For many viewers — especially LGBTQ+ teens — it was the first time they saw queer characters flirt, fight, and fall in love on MTV without being punchlines.
The show also launched the careers of many actors who would go on to mainstream success, cementing its place as a training ground for a new generation of inclusive television talent.
Undressed was groundbreaking for its time: a series that treated queer storylines as ordinary parts of a shared romantic universe rather than isolated “issues.” It ran uncensored late at night and was marketed to a broad youth audience — helping make MTV a space for sexual openness and diversity before most networks would risk it.
Decades later, it’s still cited by media scholars and fans as one of the first U.S. cable series to feature multiple LGBTQ+ storylines across seasons without sensationalizing them. Its DNA can be traced through later shows like Queer as Folk, The Real World, and MTV’s own queer-inclusive dating lineup in the 2000s.

Bryce Johnson — Cliff (straight roommate)
Jon Huertas — Evan (gay roommate)
Cliff and Evan are newly assigned freshman college roommates. Cliff is excited about bringing two girls, Nikki and Jeri, back to their dorm room. While the girls step out to use the bathroom, Evan quietly confides in Cliff that he is gay — a fact Cliff clearly didn’t expect. Jeri quickly picks up on Evan’s orientation, which jeopardizes Cliff’s plans with Nikki. The comedy and tension revolve around Cliff trying to maintain his “straight guy trying to hook up” image while navigating Evan’s honesty and the girls’ intuition.
