Despite its brief run, Boy Meets Boy cracked open the reality-dating genre for openly gay men. It premiered in the same year as Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and became one of Bravo’s highest-rated shows of the period.Its daring format — a gay bachelor choosing a partner from 15 men — placed LGBTQ+ relationships front and center in prime-time. In 2022, Time recognised its first (and only) season as one of the most influential reality TV seasons ever.

Boy Meets Boy holds a unique place in TV history as the first same-sex dating show on a major U.S. network. While the series contained a controversial twist (the lead was unaware that some suitors were straight) it nonetheless marked a visible shift: queer singles no longer needed to be confined to “special episodes” or niche networks. The show laid groundwork for an entire wave of LGBTQ+ dating and reality formats and softened the path for more inclusive programming in following years.
