The fire alarm went off at about 1:11pm on Wed., Feb 7. Students exited campus after a P.A. announcement from Principal Blake Bennett.
According to a text from Ms. Bennett to teachers, the fire alarm was mistakenly set off by workers. Following district procedure, students must wait to re-enter campus until the fire department arrives and gives the all clear.
“Looks like some workers set it off, but we still have to follow procedure and wait for the fire department. Sorry for the inconvenience,” Ms. Bennett’s text to teachers said.
Update: At 1:31 PM, the fire department arrived on campus.
Update: At 1:34 PM, the all clear was called and students were escorted back inside.
The night before an opening show, theatre students have exclusive access to the final rehearsal, referred to as a theater preview. Theater students filled Meyer Hall Feb. 22 for the 6 p.m. theater preview of “Twelfth Night, or What You Will.” The play will open on Feb. 23, with the following shows on Feb. 24, March 1, and March 2.
“The theater preview is so much fun because it’s a bunch of theater majors getting to appreciate what everyone puts on,” theatre sophomore Simrun Mendiratta said. “Everyone’s so happy to be there and to watch it, so the energy is through the roof.”
Graeme Melcher and I were simply writing our stories during our newspaper class, when suddenly -- out of nowhere -- the fire bell rings. Graeme and I had finished the first draft of the brief within the first five minutes of the initial ring, and got it through three draft cycles before we were allowed back on campus, and we published the story immediately after.
This was a spontaneous piece of coverage. Photographer Ruhaan Sood reached out to me saying how he was going to be taking pictures at the theatre preview, and I offered to write a brief. It was a really unique experience being able to go to something exclusively meant for theatre majors. I remained in the far back of Meyer Hall to stay undestracting to other theatre majors watching the show, or the performers.
