As a first year editor on The Muse, I have a lot to learn, but I am excited I've been able to do this surrounded by my awesome team!
Team Avengers:
Betsy Linkhort - Photograhper
Valentina Saenz-Daza - Photograhper
Milo Stamp - Writer
Giselle Fernandez - Writer
One of the best ways to keep in contcat with my team is to provide them with reminders in the groupchat we created at the beginning of the year. It is true that they are not always the most responsive, but I know that at the very least they read my important messages. Some messages I will send is if we have an all staff, they have something important due soon, or asking for progress on the drafy cycle they are completing.
My editing style has changed over the year, as I have noticed different things of my staffers. For example, with Milo, I will try to do the entire editing process with him to clear up any confusion, and to see through that he applys all of edits. I have also begun to add little paragraphs at the end of my edits to summarize what I saw in their story, but most importantly to make sure they know I am proud of the work they've created, as edits on their story can make them feel sad. I also try to add comments over mere grammar edits in order to allow the writer to continue giving more thought into the story, opposed to just applying the quick edits and moving on to the next person in the cycle.Â
