This project involved designing a simulated IoT-based automated garage door system to address the need for secure, precise, and remotely operable home automation. The primary focus was on achieving reliable sensor-driven actuation while enabling real-time system monitoring and secure user access. The system was developed and validated in a simulated environment, allowing rapid iteration and controlled testing of sensing, communication, and access-control components.
At the sensing layer, I integrated ultrasonic sensors to perform accurate distance measurements that directly governed automated door actuation. Achieving consistent centimeter-level precision was critical to ensure reliable system behavior and prevent false triggers. Sensor readings were continuously streamed to a cloud backend using Firebase, where I configured a real-time data pipeline capable of logging updates at a one-hertz refresh rate. This setup enabled continuous monitoring of system state and supported basic fault detection during operation.
To provide secure and accessible remote control, I developed a mobile interface using IBM Watson IoT and MIT App Inventor. The interface supported authenticated access and was designed to scale to multiple users without compromising system security. In simulation, the system successfully handled up to ten concurrent users, demonstrating its ability to manage shared access in a realistic home automation scenario.
The complete system was validated across multiple simulated test runs under varying operating conditions. These evaluations confirmed robust sensor performance, stable cloud synchronization, and reliable user control, demonstrating the feasibility of a scalable and secure IoT-based automation solution.
