Deployable Scissor Extensions

The covid pandemic had lead to different practices in Tuljapur, Maharashtra as Tuljabhavani temple is closed the economy had dropped and most of the people suffered .Revised practices observed were shops on temple street started partially opening as few pilgrims visited temple though it was closed. These shop extension were covered with tarpaulin or fabric for partially opening.

And due to this practices design syntax turned out to be the deployable scissor mechanism structure acting as shop extensions which can be closed and opened at different angles. This mechanism allows certain possibilities such as opening, closing and partially opening the shops. This intervention can also propose extensions behaving as canopy on the same street as the deployable structure is covered with translucent light weight fabric.

After the pandemic it can also be used as waiting area for pilgrims, when there is festivals and temple area is over crowded

.Stainless steel is fixed at both ends of the shop such that wooden structure is easily moved and accessed.

While opening the extensions it just need to be pulled linear and then pushed little upwards as desired and then adjusted accordingly to one's need, same mechanism goes while closing .

Design was thought considering the wooden structure for tarpaulin shops during and before the pandemic and material used which is easily available, accessible and affordable.

This intervention can be helpful even after pandemic as temple is overcrowded during navratri festival, diwali etc hence intervention acts as canopy on street which allows shade cause this place has hot and dry climate condition. Also translucent fabric covering allows intresting pattern throughout the day which pilgrims may find interesting.

Design process

Outside the temple barricades are kept due to pandemic hence design syntax turned out to be the deployable scissor mechanism structure acting as shop extensions which can be closed and opened at different angles. Overall design

Intervention can be helpful even after pandemic as temple is overcrowded during navratri festival, diwali etc hence intervention acts as canopy on street which allows shade cause this place has hot and dry climate condition. Also translucent fabric covering allows interesting pattern throughout the day which pilgrims may find interesting.

Materials are thought considering affordability and availability .

  • Movable scissors structure made of local wood available.

  • Stainless steel frame for shop extensions .
