Librarians, teachers, parents, and student readers are encouraged to read as many of the 25 titles as possible by the second Tuesday in January. This is a firm deadline set by MASL.
By signing up to be a Reader Selector, the committee will send out a summer list and another with the final list of 25 titles for consideration.
The top 15 titles will become the Gateway Award Winners List the next school year.
Voting information for the Read Down list will come from the Gateway Committee.
March Voting for the current school year
Students must read TWO of the nominee books to be eligible to vote.
Voting will occur each year from March 1st to March 10th at 11:59 p.m. This is a firm deadline set by MASL.
An online voting link will be provided on the MASL website for the librarian to submit votes for the entire student body.
Winners are announced during the Readers Award Banquet during MASL Spring Conference.

Build a Gateway Readers Program
Order books from your preferred vendor. Consider ordering a few extra paperbacks that can be then given to teachers for their classroom libraries the following year.
If budgeting prevents you from purchasing, consider a few things:
Contact a local business and inquire about them donating the books.
Apply for a grant provided by the Gateway Reading Committee. Book grant applications are available from the beginning of the school year up until shortly before MASL Spring Conference. Click here to apply.
Partner with your public library to see if they can purchase copies. They may be able to come to your school and promote the books or allow you to lend them directly from your school. Regardless, we highly recommend building a relationship with your closest public library!
Put together marketing materials. Work with other librarians in your district or learning network to divide the workload and share items created. Market within your physical space and through social media, an LMS, school or library website, or other virtual space students can access.
Create a method of keeping track of books read. This can be something simple like a bookmark or a Google Form. Keeping track early in the school year will help identify those who read two or more books by March.

Host a voting party or offer incentives for voters. Don't worry about anything extravagant or something budget-busting; students will appreciate whatever you can do!
Have a great idea? Share it with a committee member, and we will publish it here.
