Dr. Gary Breton obtained a B.S. degree in Chemistry at Stony Brook University on Long Island, NY in 1987. While at Stony Brook he worked as an undergraduate research student with Dr. Robert Kerber investigating the synthesis of fluxional organoiron compounds.
In 1991, Dr. Breton obtained a Ph.D. in Physical Organic Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, MA. Working under the mentorship of Dr. Frederick D. Greene, his thesis work investigated the synthesis and reactivity of strained azo compounds.
Dr. Breton worked as a postdoctoral fellow under Dr. Paul J. Kropp at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill from 1991 to 1994. His work there revolved around using common chromatographic reagents such as silica gel and alumina to catalyze the reactions of hydrogen halides, hydrazoic acid, and oxidizing agents.
Dr. Breton joined the Chemistry Department at Berry College in 1994 as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry. He was tenured and promoted to Associate Professor in 2000, and then promoted to Full Professor in 2008. He has served as Department Chair (2001-2004, 2007-2010), Vice Chair of Faculty Assembly (2009-2010), and Dean of the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences (2013-2020). In 2013 he was named the Callaway Professor of Chemistry with annual support from the Fuller E. Callaway Foundation, a title he currently retains.
