The Global Alliance for Rapid Diagnostics (GARD) is a multidisciplinary peer-to-peer network of equals committed to improving health worldwide. It was founded in 2016 by Prof. Evangelyn Alocilja of Michigan State University, and currently has more than 200 members across all six continents.
Every year, the free virtual GARD Forum allows experts, academics, and participants to discuss the use of innovative technologies to sustain all aspects of human welfare.
An innovation challenge is a competition or call for ideas that encourages individuals or teams to propose solutions to a specific problem or challenge. These challenges are typically open to the public and can be sponsored by companies, government organizations, or non-profits.
The goal of an innovation challenge is to gather fresh perspectives and creative solutions from a diverse range of people. The winning idea or ideas may receive funding, support, or recognition to further develop and implement their solutions.
The GARD Forum offers an Innovation Challenge in the form of three-minute elevator pitches with the goal of fostering skills such as ingenuity, leadership, and collaboration.
Participants have to demonstrate a clear understanding of the challenge and provide a clear and comprehensible description of their solution including benefits for their main target audience and other market-related aspects. After deliberation by the judging panel, three winners are selected and awarded cash prizes.
Taking place virtually through Zoom, the 2025 GARD Forum offered an opportunity to network with participants across the globe and join technical sessions, short courses, virtual cultural presentations, a Global Innovation Challenge, and more!
The culmination of the Innovation Challenge was an online synchronous event, where finalists engaged with and had their work reviewed by an esteemed panel of expert judges. Judges then selected the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners, who were announced at the end of the GARD 2025 Forum.
