Gutters direct water falling on the garage roof to a 1,000 gallon plastic tank. A 3" PVC pipe directs overflow to the orchard area.
Two types of rainwater harvesting trap and hold storm run-off: active harvesting and passive harvesting. Active harvesting is the collection of storm run-off into barrels, tanks or cisterns, and at GardenCasaKayT, active harvesting collects all of the rainwater falling on the 1,100 sq. ft. detached garage into a 1,000 gallon tank at the rear of the garage. The tank is situated on an elevated platform to provide additional gravity-assisted pressure. One inch of rain will fill the tank, and is used to supplement hand watering of the garden and orchard areas. Overflow is directed through a 3" PVC pipe to a pop-up valve in the orchard catchment area.
A pop-up valve waters the orchard basin with overflow from the water harvesting tank.
