The Village of Romeoville is a vibrant and expanding community of more than 40,000 people. Romeoville's business environment has never seen a more positive environment. Romeoville is a city with a balanced economy as well as a dynamic business atmosphere.
According to the census of 2010, Romeoville encompasses a total area of 18.759 square miles (48.59 km2). Of this, 18.44 square miles (47.76 km2) comprises 98.3 percent of the land area, and 0.319 square miles (0.83 km2), which accounts for 1.7%, is water. The active community shares borders with adjacent regions like Bolingbrook, Plainfield, Crystal Lawns, Crest Hill, Lockport, and Lemont which places it strategically inside Will County.
A rich and fascinating history, Romeoville was among the last areas in Will County to be settled by Native Americans. The village known as Romeo had its first settlers on the 14th of September, 1835, located on Isle a La Cache, a small island situated in the Des Plaines River. Notably, the first bridge built during this time allowed access to the island from the west bank. The completion of the I&M Canal in 1848 attracted new residents, and by January 19, 1895 the village was incorporated and was renamed as Romeoville. Alongside Joliet, it became renowned as "Stone City," in reference to its flourishing limestone quarries, with the Illinois State Capitol featuring Romeoville limestone.
In the course of time, Romeoville evolved significantly, particularly in comparison to its small population in 1950that was home to just 46 houses and 147 residents. A turning point occurred in the year 1957, with the creation of the Hampton Park Subdivision, leading to gradual population growth. The opening of the initial I-55 exchange at Weber Road on October 5, 1990, connected Romeoville with the Chicagoland region, opening an avenue for suburbization. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Romeoville was one of the most rapidly growing communities in Illinois and saw an increase of over 25,000 new residents in just two decades.
Tragically, recent incidents have brought attention to the problems facing the community. In a shocking incident on the 16-17th of September, 2023 four members of a family comprising 2 adults as well as two children was brutally murdered during a massacre at their Romeoville home, and their three dogs also dying. The authorities classified the incident as a targeted attack. The suspect, a 31-year-old Nathaniel Huey Jr., was tracked down in Oklahoma several days later. After a haphazard turn at a traffic stop he escaped, taking his wife's life prior to ending his own.
