The Village of Romeoville is a dynamic and expanding community of more than 40,000 people. Romeoville's business climate has never seen a more positive environment. Romeoville has a balanced economy and progressive business climate.
According to the census of 2010, Romeoville encompasses a total area of 18.759 square miles (48.59 km2). Of this, 18.44 square miles (47.76 km2) comprises 98.3 percent of the land area, and 0.319 square miles (0.83 km2), which accounts for 1.7 percent, is water. The active community shares borders with neighboring areas such as Bolingbrook, Plainfield, Crystal Lawns, Crest Hill, Lockport, and Lemont and is strategically located inside Will County.
Rich in history, Romeoville was among the last regions in Will County to be settled by Native Americans. The village known as Romeo was first settled on the 14th of September 1835, located on Isle a La Cache, a small island within the Des Plaines River. Notably, the first bridge built during this time allowed access to the island from the west bank. The completion of the I&M Canal in 1848 attracted new residents. By the 19th of January, 1895, the village was incorporated and was renamed as Romeoville. Alongside Joliet, it became renowned as "Stone City,"" due to its thriving limestone quarries, with the Illinois State Capitol featuring Romeoville limestone.
Over the years, Romeoville evolved significantly, especially from its sparse population in 1950that contained just 46 homes and 147 residents. The turning point came in 1957 with the development of the Hampton Park Subdivision, leading to an increase in population. The opening of the first I-55 interchange at Weber Road on October 5 1990, linked Romeoville with the Chicagoland region, opening the way for suburbanization. Throughout the 1990s and into the decade 2000, Romeoville has been one of the communities that grew fastest in Illinois and saw an increase of over 25,000 new residents in just two decades.
Tragically, recent events have brought attention to the community's challenges. In a tragic incident that occurred on 16-17 September 2023, a family of four consisting of the two parents and children, was tragically murdered during a massacre at their Romeoville residence, with three dogs also losing their lives. Authorities have classified the crime as a targeted attack. The suspect, a 31-year-old Nathaniel Huey Jr., was found in Oklahoma days later. After a haphazard turn at a traffic stop he fled, eventually taking the life of his fiancee and ending his own.
