Ganesh gave invited talks at ASA and IIT Madras (5th Dec 2025)

Ganesh gave an invited research talk at the Sixth Joint Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America and the Acoustical Society of Japan held in Honolulu, Hawaii. The talk was about his recent work on using neural networks to infer scatterer geometries from acoustic wavefields with potential application in characterizing the geometries of finite metamaterials with known effective properties.

Ganesh gave a research vision talk at the U-M Annual Data Science and AI Summit (17th Nov 2025)

Ganesh gave a vision talk centered around his current postdoctoral research on "Transforming perception with AI and biosonar " at the U-M Annual Data Science and AI Summit.

His talk explored how bridging the gap between biological echolocation (biosonar) and engineered perception can open new possibilities for saving lives, exploring unknown environments, and revealing what lies beneath surfaces. Ganesh also discussed future directions and potential challenges in realizing AI-driven artificial biosonars. Read more about this research here.

Paper accepted for publication in IEEE Access (10th Sep 2025)

Our follow-up work on echolocation-inspired perception is now published in IEEE Access. This work demonstrates key abilities of our method: 1) scalability to learn new shapes sequentially, 2) multi-object identification when more than one object is in the vicinity, and 3) localization of the objects.

This work, along with the recent study that demonstrated we can synthetically train these CNN models and still process measured echoes, offers an effective sound-based sensing and perception method for potential use in imaging, detection, and navigation.

Ganesh selected as MIDAS Postdoctoral Affiliate (9th Aug 2025)

Ganesh was selected as a 2025 Postdoctoral Affiliate of the Michigan Institute for Data & AI in Society (MIDAS), joining a competitively selected cohort of 17 postdocs from across the University of Michigan. He is part of a cohort whose work either advances a domain through novel applications of data science or AI methodologies, or develops new AI or data science methodologies.

His postdoctoral work brings together wave physics, biosonars, and AI/ML to help machines interpret sound the way animals do. By studying how echolocating species like dolphins and bats perceive their environments, he designs AI-powered acoustic perception methods that are efficient, reliable, and adaptable.

Paper accepted for publication in the Journal of Sound and Vibration (23rd May 2025)

Ganesh's postdoctoral research on Ultrasound Perception has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Sound and Vibration. The paper titled "Synthetically-trained neural networks for shape classification from measured acoustic scattering" is the first kind of study in ultrasound perception that used data-driven models trained from purely synthetic data to still process and interpret real-world echoes. Ganesh participated in the NextProf Engineering for Future Faculty Workshop (20th May 2025)

Ganesh participated in the NextProf Engineering, organized by Michigan Engineering. This workshop included engaging and insightful discussions from faculty members across the College of Engineering on planning and transitioning from an early career researcher position into a junior faculty position.

Ganesh gave a technical talk on "Artificial Echolocation" at IMECE 2024 (18th Nov 2024)

Ganesh presented his current postdoctoral research work on "Artificial Echolocation: Leveraging Neural Networks for Ultrasound-based Shape Recognition" at the ASME's International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Exposition (IMECE) 2024 held in Portland, Oregon.

The work was presented at a technical session on "New Advances in Acoustics and Vibration: AI and Machine Learning, New Methods and Materials".

Ganesh wins 1st place prize at the NASEM's USNC/TAM 5MT (20th Sept 2024)

Ganesh wins the 1st place prize at the 2024 National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s (NASEM) USNC/TAM 5MT. This was a 5-minute Virtual Thesis in Mechanics Competition for students who defended their PhD last year. Recent graduates from universities all across the USA participated in this competition. The top ten finalists presented their thesis at the virtual event, where Ganesh was awarded the joint 1st place prize. The finalist's presentation can be accessed here. Ganesh's PhD dissertation was on "Nonlinear wave dynamics of continuum phononic materials with periodic rough contacts".

Ganesh presented a poster at the MURI Program Review in Washington DC, USA (9th July 2024)

Ganesh presented a poster on his ongoing postdoctoral research on "Estimating the soundscape around echolocating dolphins from sparse hydrophone measurements" at the Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) Program Review 2024 held in Washington DC, USA.

This research is part of the MURI grant "Neurobehavioral, Physiological, and Computational Processes of Auditory Object Learning in Mammals", which includes collaboration between different universities and faculties. In this poster, we developed and validated a numerical model to simulate sound fields echolocated by dolphins during object perception.

Ganesh gave a technical talk and presented a poster at the ARC Annual Program Review in Ann Arbor, USA (5th June 2024)

Ganesh presented his ongoing postdoctoral research on "Ultrasound perception in physical environments from synthetically trained neural networks" at the Automotive Research Center Annual Program Review held in Michigan Union in Ann Arbor, USA

The talk was part of a special session on "Perception and Planning" for ground vehicles. This work takes inspiration from biological echolocation and develops artificial ultrasound perception using a state-of-the-art machine learning algorithm.

Ganesh gave a guest lecture at his undergrad alma mater - VJTI (24th Apr 2024)

Ganesh gave a guest lecture on "Physics of acoustic waves: from metamaterials to ultrasound perception" to undergraduate students in Mechanical Engineering at VJTI. The lecture was part of the Mechanical Vibration course and introduced students to cutting-edge research in the field of acoustics. Prof. Sachin Barve hosted the lecture.

Ganesh joined Popa's Research Group at the University of Michigan as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (5th Oct 2023)

Ganesh has joined Prof. Bogdan I. Popa's Research Group in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. Ganesh will conduct research on implementing machine learning algorithms to study acoustic waves for material characterization and nondestructive evaluation.

Ganesh attended the Joints Workshop (14th Sep 2023)

Ganesh participated in the three-day Joints Workshop organized by the International Committee on Joint Mechanics in Orkney Springs, Virginia, USA. The participants of the workshop included researchers from academic institutions, national labs, and industry to re-establish the multi-disciplinary community working on the aspects of dynamic analysis of joints and interfaces.

Ganesh successfully defended his Ph.D. Dissertation (1st Aug 2023)

Ganesh defended his Ph.D. research on "Nonlinear wave dynamics of continuum phononic materials with periodic rough contacts". The committee that examined the work included Prof. Kathryn Matlack (Ph.D. Advisor), Prof. Alex Vakakis, Prof. Alison Dunn, and Prof. Ahmed Elbanna. Read more about Ganesh's research here.

Paper accepted for publication in Journal of Applied Mechanics (25th April 2023)

Ganesh's recent work on shear wave-induced friction at periodic interfaces for programmable mechanical responses is accepted for publication in the Journal of Applied Mechanics. This work presents how frictional instability at contacts gives rise to residual strains (or eigenstrains) and how we can leverage these strains to enable wave-actuated smart functionality such as programmable mechanical switch and surface reconfigurability. This work was conducted in collaboration with Dr. Alfredo Fantetti from Imperial College London. The paper may be found here.

Ganesh presented and organized a special session on "Tunable Metamaterials" at the ASA conference (5th Dec 2022)

Ganesh along with Dr. Ben Goldsberry (Applied Research Lab, UT Austin) organized a special session on "Tunable Metamaterials" at the 183rd meeting of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), held in Nashville, Tennessee. The objective of this session was to showcase recent advances in manipulating wave propagation through acoustic and elastic metamaterials by means of active and/or passive mechanisms, including new or improved analytical, computational, and experimental approaches. Ganesh also presented his latest research on “Frictional instability: A nonlinear mechanism to control shear wave responses in rough contact-based metamaterials” in the session. Ganesh won the Best Student Paper Award at ASA Denver Conference (4th Aug 2022)

Ph.D. student Ganesh Patil won the Best Student Paper Award – First Place in Structural Acoustics and Vibration for his presentation titled “Experimental study of nonlinear waves in phononic materials with rough contacts” at the 182nd meeting of the Acoustical Society of America held in Denver, CO, USA. Congratulations Ganesh!

Ganesh presented research work at the 10th ENOC conference in Lyon, France (22nd July 2022)

Ganesh presented his ongoing research work on "Nonlinear wave disintegration in phononic material with weakly compressed rough contacts" at the 10th European Nonlinear Dynamics (or Oscillator) Conference - ENOC 2022 held in Lyon, France. The conference proceeding paper may be found here.

Paper accepted for publication in Extreme Mechanics Letter (11th June 2022)

Ganesh's recent work on exploiting nonlinear wave mixing in phononic materials to enable nonreciprocal waves is accepted for publication in Extreme Mechanics Letters. This work presents a concept of a phononic diode based on phononic materials with rough contacts. This diode leverages wave mixing and band gap mechanisms to control and tune nonreciprocal waves over broad frequency ranges. Congrats Ganesh! The paper may be found here.

Ganesh organized a special session on "Nonlinear Phononics and Metamaterials" at the ASA conference (23rd May 2022)

Ganesh's research is featured as a spotlight (13th April 2022)

Recent work from Ganesh Patil is currently featured as a “PRE Spotlight” on the homepage of Physical Review E. The paper, “Strongly nonlinear wave dynamics of continuum phononic materials with periodic rough contacts,” was selected by the journal’s editors under the theme of Solitary Wave Dynamics in Strongly Nonlinear Phononic Materials.

The spotlight features a small selection of papers dealing with the same subject area and is intended to highlight emerging or established subject matter covered by the journal. Each Spotlight is featured on the website for about six weeks.

Paper accepted for publication in Physical Review E (19th Jan 2022)

Ganesh's recent work on strongly nonlinear wave dynamics of continuum phononic material with rough contacts has been accepted for publication in Physical Review E. This work presents new wave phenomena such as acoustic resonances and the formation of stegotons that are achievable in continuum phononic material with discrete nonlinearity. These behaviors allow phononic material to act as an energy absorber as well as a propagator. Congrats Ganesh!

Paper accepted for publication in Wave Motion (31st May 2021)

Ganesh Patil’s paper on “Wave self-interactions in continuum phononic material with periodic contact nonlinearity” has been accepted for publication in Wave Motion.

The paper studies how a periodic arrangement of rough contacts can be exploited to control nonlinear wave propagation. The paper can be accessed here.

Songyuan won the Outstanding Presentation Award at URS 2021 (7th May 2021)

Ganesh receives Outstanding TAM TA Award (17th May 2020)

Ganesh Patil received Mechanical Science and Engineering department’s James O. Smith Outstanding TAM TA Award 2020. Ganesh was TAM 212 TA for Spring 19 (Instructor: Prof. Matt West and Prof. Kathryn H. Matlack) and Fall 19 (Instructor: Prof. Srinivasa Salapaka). As a TA, Ganesh has developed the Prairielearn-based exam assessment platform for TAM 212 in addition to fulfilling traditional responsibilities of leading discussion sessions, office hours, and student-staff interactions.

Mentoring NSF EFRI – REU (31st May 2019)

Undergraduates (Edgar Becerra and Mark Guo) from Parkland College joined the WPML group under the NSF EFRI-REU outreach program. They will work with Ganesh on ongoing projects to get hands-on experience in research activities.

Under the NSF EFRI-REU program at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, undergraduates are working with Prof. Vakakis, Prof. Sameh Tawfick, Prof. Aimy Wissa, and Prof. Katie Matlack’s group.

Talk at Alma Mater (7th Jan 2019)

Ganesh gave an invited short talk to the students of batch 2019 of Diploma in Mechanical Engineering during his visit to his undergraduate alma mater – VJTI. This talk was focused on the recent research developments in Ganesh's field and the importance of student engagement in research activities.

Aditya Shedge, a junior undergraduate student at the Mechanical Science and Engineering department has joined Prof. Matlack’s WPML research group. He will be working with Ganesh on designing new lattice materials.

Ganesh worked on developing TAM 251 PrairieLearn – an online system for exam assessment over the summer along with TAM 2XX faculty and staff.

Graduate Coordinator at Exploring MechSE (19th June 2018)

Ganesh, along with other UIUC graduate students (Xian Zhang, Nick Wright, and Andy Yoon) coordinated 3D printing and Prosthetics activities at the WYSE camps for high school students.

Science Outreach at Illini Women’s Basketball Camp! (12th June 2018)

Ganesh participated in a science outreach activity organized by Prof. Hutchen’s group for girl campers, ranging from 3rd to 8th grade. The activity introduced basketball players to polymers, mechanical testing, and design to mimic shoe sole structures. Read more about this event here.

Joined UIUC and WPML (26th Aug 2017)

Ganesh started his graduate studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and also joined Wave Propagation and Metamaterials Lab as a Graduate Research Assistant. Ganesh will be advised by Prof. Katie Matlack and work on elastic wave propagation through engineered multiscale materials.

Ganesh said goodbye to his research job at Bajaj Auto Limited to pursue his career in academics. Ganesh worked at the Bajaj Auto R&D division for 3 years. His research was focused on finite element modeling and durability predictions of Bajaj and KTM vehicles. He worked with vehicle durability, vibration, and dynamics group on multiple projects. This is what he has to say on his last day:

”Coming to Bajaj has been the most beautiful moment of my life. Inspired by the popularity of Bajaj motorcycles over many decades, I always wanted to be part of it and consider myself lucky to be able to do so. My group (Vehicle CAE) has been an amazing team, they are like a second family, and we’ve really been through some ups and downs together. I will never be able to forget the memories I have from here. I learned many things in Bajaj and I am sure all those will be helpful for me in my future endeavors.”

2nd Indian FEMFAT User Conference (19th March 2016)

Ganesh attended the “2nd Indian FEMFAT User Conference and advance fatigue analysis training” in Pune. The conference was focused on recent advances in durability and fatigue analysis.

Attended “nCode Glyphworks and Designlife” Workshop (19th Dec 2015)

Ganesh attended several workshops on “Test Data Analysis using nCode Glyphworks and advanced concepts in Designlife” organized by Mahesh Software Systems Pvt. Ltd. at Pune. The focus of the workshop was to post-process and implement vibration fatigue strategies and analysis.

Bajaj Auto – Joined CAE (19th Aug 2015)

Ganesh joined the Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) department at the Bajaj Auto R&D division. He will be working with the Vehicle-CAE section. Ganesh will primarily research on the durability analysis of vehicle chassis, components, and engine mounts.

Seven-Year-Long Connection with VJTI (19th Aug 2014)

Ganesh started his engineering education at VJTI in 2007. He completed his Diploma in Mechanical in 2011 and continued with his undergraduate studies. Now, in 2014, Ganesh will be completing his Bachelor of Technology degree and will be leaving VJTI.

Research Project Assistant at Hindalco (19th May 2013)

Ganesh and his project group members (Anish Biwalkar, Suraj Pawar, and Giridhar Jambare) are selected to work as Research Project Assistants at Hindalco Industries Limited. They will be advised by Dr. Gautam Wagle to work on their final-year design project and B.Tech Thesis. Their project will be focused on developing a finite element model for predicting heat transfer during the annealing process.

Honored by Chief Minister for Academic Excellence (19th March 2011)

Ganesh was honored by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra state “Shri. Prithviraj Chauhan” for securing the first rank in the diploma examinations. This honor was given at the occasion of the convocation ceremony of the diploma batch of 2011.

Received “Lord Reay” and “Dadabhoy Naoroji” Gold Medals (19th March 2011)

Ganesh received LORD REAY Gold Medal for obtaining the highest aggregate marks (or grades) among all licentiate courses (1/300) within engineering majors at VJTI.
Ganesh received DADABHOY NAOROJI Gold Medal for obtaining the highest aggregate marks in the four years total examination among all licentiate courses (1/300) within engineering majors at VJTI.

Goodbye Siemens Ltd (7th Jan 2011)

Ganesh completed his internship at Siemens Ltd and will be rejoining his academic courses. Here is what Ganesh has to say about his internship experience:

” This was my first industrial experience. I really liked my time here as an intern. Siemens Ltd is a very big company and I always wanted to see how it feels to work with such a huge organization. During this internship, I got hands-on experience while working on various projects throughout the year. I was able to connect the link between theoretical and practical work. I was very fortunate to have Mr. Rupesh Malewadkar as my mentor. He has always motivated me to find innovative ways to address plant issues. We worked together to optimize tool geometries and plant layouts. I think the experience I got here will be very helpful for me to realize the physical significance of the concepts we learn in courses. I also realized the importance of collaborative work as often I had to work with people from different departments. Overall, this internship was an enriching experience for me. I made some new friends here and I am going to miss them for sure.”

Received “World Vision” Award (3rd March 2009)

Ganesh received the “World Vision” award for the second year in a row for being a departmental scholar in mechanical engineering at VJTI.

Start of an Engineering Career (17th Aug 2007)

Ganesh joined the Licentiate Diploma course in Mechanical Engineering at VJTI, Mumbai, and kicked off his career in the field of engineering.
