*** The headlines and video contain discussions of racism and violence, which may be upsetting for some people ***
This lesson will have you looking at systems and narratives. Let's start the discussion by reading this quote from Baratunde Thurston:
“Systems are just collective stories we all buy into and when we change them, we write a better reality for us all to be a part of.”
View the TedTalk "How to Deconstruct Rasicm One Headline at a Time." It is almost 17 minutes long.
As you view the video, take notes on this idea of narrative (or stories), who gets to tell them, and what the effect of this control might be.
Play the Living While Black game to extend this concept. Screen shot your results to submit. How many headlines did you accurately identify? What do you notice? How do you feel about the narrative that is being created by these headlines?
Using the repository of Living While Black headlines, identify the subject/target/activity for several headlines, then ‘flip the script’’ by challenging and rewriting these narratives as Thurston does in his talk.
Create a response to the video, game & headline activity. This can be formatted as a blog entry, video diary, or written response. I encourage you to include images, especially of your game results and diagrammed headlines. It will be assessed using the Reflective Response Rubric (below).
You might want to use these questions to help shape your reflection:
How does this change your idea of the neutrality of the media? How could the headlines be reported in a different manner?
What does Thurston’s argument teach us about stories, systems, and power? How does language play a part in this power?
What stood out to you the most about the activities in today’s lesson? What would you tell a friend or family member? What was important and why?
What questions do you have? What further areas of learning would you like to explore? Can you connect or extend?
If this doesn’t change your thinking at all, reflect on that. Is it because you disagree? Do you agree and have your own powerful experience you’d like to communicate?
