The Kite Runner

Completed Unit Base XP: 900

View this trailer to get an idea of the novel that you might choose to study. Please be aware that this novel contains scenes of sexual violence involving a child. However, the trailer is approved for all audiences.

This is an excellent novel study unit to select because it explicitly teaches elements of fiction, so if you haven't completed any of the Short Story quests, you can cover that content here.

It discusses heroes, symbolism, irony, character, style, and delves into Human Rights. You might choose to segue this into a research paper of some length on a human rights issue in Afghanistan (or of your choosing). The content, as quoted on the cover, is "shattering... devastating, and inspiring," so readers need to prepare themselves for the emotions that it might bring up.

Many students have read and enjoyed this novel as well as this challenging novel study. I would recommend it for students interested in going to university, as it is both detailed in terms of course content and fairly rigorous.

The entire unit can be viewed on our main moodle page for the English 12 course.

Naturally, you can adapt and modify this unit to suit your needs and desires. Please check with me when you're making those decisions, so I can help make sure you're on the right track.

Submit your assignments as you go, keeping track of the time you spend reading, taking notes, and working on assignments. Submit these times with each assignment. If your total number of XP at the end of the unit is less than 900, I will bump you up. If it is more, then of course you have earned them!
