Alina McDonald is an elite pole vaulter from South Carolina. Alina strives to qualify for the U.S. national team and represent her country at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Competing in a sport at the highest professional level has brought immense pressure throughout her career. However, she has overcome many mental and physical challenges and pushed herself to new heights to pursue her Olympic dreams. She shared some of her insights with us.
"How has focusing on your mental health helped you?" (interviewer)
Alina's journey has been marked by challenges that have tested her mental resilience. Injuries have caused her periods of heightened anxiety and self-doubt, making it difficult to push through and stay focused on her goals. However, Alina has found ways to overcome these obstacles. She has learned to embrace imperfection. With the help of great coaches and mentors, Alina has developed a mindset that is "okay with making mistakes," She finds that it helps her navigate difficult times. Additionally, she has found success in "repping with the stress" - facing the discomfort head-on and continuing to pursue her goals despite any circumstantial anxiety.
"Do you have any recommendations for other athletes who may be struggling with mental health issues?" (interviewer)
Alina mentions, "Having an identity outside of the sport is critical" for student-athletes to avoid "tying their self-worth to their athletic performance." She also emphasizes the importance of relying on their athletic community for support and finding ways to keep the joy in their sport. Alina believes these practices can help individuals maintain a balanced and healthy perspective on their mental well-being while participating in sports at all levels of competition.
