The race teams are only for full-time students. A full-time student is enrolled in 12-credit-hours or is a graduate/PHD student and is in good academic and financial status with the institution.
Alumni, UofSC faculty/staff, or fans are more than welcome to be a part of our club during practices or any other kind of support (jerseys, sponsorships, donations).
Team Sponsors receive a team-issue jersey as part of their donation. If you’re interested, please contact the president, Claire Windsor, at cwindsor@email.sc.edu or our team email: sotriath@mailbox.sc.edu
I have never done a bike race or a triathlon. Can I still join?
Of course! Our group of highly skilled members and community cycling mentors/coaches will prepare you and guide you through the process on how to train and prepare for your first race. All backgrounds and skill levels are always welcome!
Student members are highly recommended to race and will get the most out of this experience with race and practice participation. No one is required to race, so any level of commitment is allowed.
I like to ride bikes, and I’ve done a triathlon or two but UofL Cycling and Triathlon seems too intense for me. Can I join but not race?
Student members are highly recommended to race and committed members are those that race and train. No one is required to race, so any level of commitment is allowed. However, what you invest in this club is what you will get out especially with racing: lots of fun, improved fitness and health, race wins and accomplishments, and memories with college friends.
GCTC trains on local roads and trails around the Columbia area with occasional trips to the Upstate of SC for some longer mountainous rides.
see the page: Training and Group Rides for training specifics
UofSC Cycling and Triathlon are not varsity teams at the University of South Carolina. Instead we are a club sport through Campus Recreation. Members provide most of their own equipment. We have several sponsors that help provide funding for our races.
Depending of the year's funding and participation, travel and race expenses will be covered by our team fund to help with gas money, accommodation costs, and race entry fees.
Bike and triathlon racing is definitely not your typical kind of sport in the U.S., but it is arguably the most challenging, enjoyable, accomplishing, and tactical race you can sign up for. It's both a physical and mental game not only between you and your competitors, but also between you and what you're capable of. When you start any kind of bike or triathlon race, you put your hours of training to the test and prove to yourself and others that you have the drive and determination to finish that race...and maybe even win it!
If you are new to bike or triathlon racing, check out the specific details on the team pages.
