The decision to use the name "Gaia" was inspired by teachings of James Lovelock, who introduced the "Gaia hypothesis" in the 1960s. To honour the intelectual/academic approach of viewing Planet Earth as an interrelated living system, the group is contributing to disseminate this line of thought by applying the name "Gaia" within a scientific context.

A decisão de usar o nome "Gaia" foi inspirada nos ensinamentos de James Lovelock, que introduziu a "hipótese Gaia" na década de 1960. Para honrar a abordagem intelectual/acadêmica de ver o Planeta Terra como um sistema vivente e inter-relacionado, o grupo está contribuindo para disseminar esta linha de pensamento ao aplicar o nome “Gaia” dentro de um contexto científico.
