Founder and Director - Georgetown Environmental Justice Program
I am a French economist and Professor at the McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown University. I founded and currently direct the Georgetown Environmental Justice Program. I am a Senior Researcher at CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) and served as Chief Economist at the French Development Agency (AFD), between 2015 and 2019. I also am a Jesuit priest.
My research interests range from dynamic non-linear macroeconomics to ecological economics, and also include game theory and general equilibrium theory.
I studied mathematics and economics at the Ecole Normale Supérieure (Paris) and ENSAE (Paris) and obtained my PhD in applied mathematics at Polytechnique (Paris). I also have a canonical doctorate in theology from Centre Sèvres (Paris) and an honorary doctorate from the University of Namur (Belgium).
I served two years in Chad as a mathematics and physics teacher in a Jesuit high school and also founded a center for street children in Balimba, which is still functioning today. After working as a quant and scientific advisor for investment banks between 1999 and 2004, I entered the Society of Jesus in September 2004. I was ordained a priest in 2013.
In the meantime, I carried on my research in economics. I was nominated for the Best young French economist price (Le Monde and Le Cercle des Economistes) in 2009. I co-founded the Energy and Prosperity Chair (Ecole Normale Supérieure, Polytechnique, ENSAE) in 2015. I am a Permanent Fellow at the Institut d’Etudes Avancées de Nantes since 2017 and a Visiting Professor at the Stellenbosch University.
Since 2020, I have been a Professor at the McCourt School of Public Policy and Director of the Environmental Justice Program at Georgetown University. This interdisciplinary laboratory works with governments, companies and communities (in the global South and North) to build models of the interplay between the economy, natural resources and climate, in order to reduce financial risks and plan for the ecological transition. I am also Honorary President of the Institut Rousseau, a French non-partisan think tank.
In addition, as a theologian, I work on political theology, particularly on political theology of the Anthropocene era and applied to the Commons and their management (see my last book).
Fields: Dynamic and Non-Linear Macroeconomics, Ecological Economics, Game Theory, General Equilibrium Theory, Financial markets, Mathematical Economics, Political Theology.
