In order to test whether a UV light could kill microbes, we took samples from toilet seats and flush handles in multiple restrooms around our high school. We incubated the samples for 24 hours, and examined them under a microscope. We then exposed them to a UV light for 30 minutes and compared.
Our test results were somewhat inconclusive. Our prototype functioned as intended, with the servo and diode activating as intended when a user exits the restroom stall. However, the UV light we used to test our samples only showed minor damage to the bacteria we collected. In the future, we would incorporate stronger UV lights into our design, as well as continue to experiment with the timing between a user leaving and the activation of the UV light. We would also implement a system for the entire restroom, rather than a single stall.
