Since one of the hard things about Digital Making is creating a detailed 3D Model first, we are exploring ways of Scanning existing objects. Adrian has made a good start with a quite complex Subject:
2D Photo of a Statuette
Rotatable 3D Scan of a stone Statuette, created from 37 such Photos
Scalable 3D Model of the Statuette - Progress!
Another trick of the trade is including calculations inside a 3D Model, for example to change its size or select specific features. It's called Parameterisation.
A simple example is this Generator for full-size Shed Plates:
You just type the Shed Code ~ instead of having to draw out each character.
While on the subject of Plates, here's a harsh enlargement showing just what UV-Hardened Resin is capable of - already:
1:32 scale GER Locomotive Number Plate
Taking Parameterisation further, here is highly detailed 3D Model of a full-sized 1923 Railway Clearing House mineral wagon, including every detail shown on the original drawings:
This 3D Model has several User-Settable features, for example, it can be printed in different sizes without either re-drawing from scratch, or crude re-scaling. (Remember that a 10mm model is not merely a larger version of a 1:32 model: after all, both are the same gauge.)
1:32 (front) and 10mm body shells
Zooming in on the 3D Model, showing just how precise detail can be:
Finally, a simple 3D Model that's ideal for practicing with:
