reuben's navy recruitment starts out like too many others - young, dumb, and desperate for something more. accepted to duke, along with his high school sweetheart charlie, his college dreams had nearly ended before they began when a shoulder injury resulted in a rescinded baseball scholarship. like so many kids, he'd been easily sweet-talked by the benefits and the promise of a future; even then, he had plans to marry charlie. 

one of his mentors recommended the path to flight school and it'd been his competitive streak that had him chasing after an f-18, and in time, an invitation to top gun. wanting to wait till he'd at least gone through flight school, so charlie could settle into her own career in tech as he began his, their plans to marry accelerated when a cousin asked if they could take in (and eventually adopt) their one year old daughter, nicki. nicki is now 12 and the big sister to their youngest, jackie.

bob's parents cried the day he told them he was going to mit via a navy rotc scholarship. while his mom adjusted to the life of a military spouse fairly well and his dad was proud of his service, it wasn't the kind of life either wished on their son - the constant moving, the worry. worry, which was amplified by the death of bob's sister, stevie, when she was 14 after falling through the ice while ice-skating during a family vacation; they're terrified of loosing another kid. but for bob, he didn't see any other career options outside of flying. he watched his dad's fixed-wing piloting career and was determined to be up in the air himself. the role of wizzo fits him well, and he excels at it, being invited to top gun twice. follows canon; affiliated with gracie floyd (heartbreaking).

mickey was never sure what he wanted to do with his life - and that was just fine with him, he has soccer, friends, and family. 

he plays well enough to get a decent scholarship into the university of miami, and that’s even better; his sisters went there, so did their parents. there’s a lot he can attribute to them - his nickname (from maria’s obsession with disney even if she won't admit it), his love for star trek and anything sci-fi related (marathons with his dad), his love for music (even if it meant a few years in youth choir), hell, even his personality (growing up shy would’ve been impossible with how bright and bubbly his mom and sister, camila, are). the directionlessness of his future, though, is all his own.
