Kathrine Jo Carter
28; summer baby
Kate grew up in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, raised on her family's farm. Her father passed when she was in elementary school and her mom was careful to ensure that ranch life never encroached on Kate's academic opportunities.
She attended NSU/Muskogee for her undergrad and part of her PhD. She dropped out with her Master's and secured a job with NOAA in New York, determined to leave that life behind.
Movie based.
Kate returns to NSU to complete her PhD, working under her old PI. She still works with NOAA during this time as they fund part of her PhD.
Also, at the insistence of many people in her life, Kate starts to work through her PTSD, initially through talk-therapy and then anti-anxiety meds.
Tyler James Owens
30; winter
Raised by his aunt, officially adopted by her in early elementary school, Tyler grew up with the idea of community and kindness. It'd been his athleticism and easy confidence that inspired his cockiness. It worked well on the rodeo circuit, except for all the concussions.
He turns his fascination, and fear, into a degree, but his time in academics ends after a post-bacc program. Tyler's love of storms doesn't translate to patience for the academic papers and grant cycles. And in the era of Mythbusters and Bill Nye, he wants to make his own mark.
Movie based.
While Kate's interest in academic pursuits is reawakened after the tornadoes they experienced, Tyler doesn't entertain the same want. He likes the freedom his social media pages allow him; although, reworking the models does make him wonder if there's a future there - a way to help that isn't just food and clothing and appeals to his followers to pitch into torn-through communities.
