Computational Problems in Groups and Cryptographic Applications
Abstracts. Integer factorization has been extensively studied and has inspired numerous cryptographic applications, whose security relies on the hardness of integer factorization. This raises the question of whether factorization can be extended to other algebraic structures, with the hope of developing new cryptographic primitives. In this presentation, we discuss what it means to uniquely and efficiently factorize elements in general multiplicative abelian groups. We explore some cryptographic applications, present arguments on the complexity of the underlying mathematical problems, and provide insights into the security of the applications.
Biography. Koray Karabina leads the Cryptography and Quantum Computing Team at the National Research Council of Canada, and he is appointed as an adjunct associate professor at the University of Waterloo. Koray Karabina’s research focuses on the design, implementation, and cryptanalysis of cryptographic algorithms and protocols. He is particularly interested in post-quantum cryptography, secure biometrics, and the interplay between machine learning and cryptography.

As a high school math teacher I am passionate about learning and teaching Mathematics. I enjoy problem solving and logic puzzles. I also enjoy the analytical aspect of math and have been teaching Statistics to high school students for over 10 years. I currently teach AP Statistics, AP Precalculus and AICE Thinking Skills. I have a M.A. in Mathematics and am always looking for new learning experiences. I like to kayak, read books and travel to new places.
