Gift of Life

A lot of you came along my journey after this chapter in my life. During my first 2 years at GWU, I signed up to be added to the bone marrow/stem cell registry with Gift of Life to hopefully one day match and become a donor. Being a match and donating stem cells/bone marrow was the closest thing I could think of to directly saving someone’s life and making that big of an impact. Soon after, it was brought to my attention that I could sign up to be a “campus ambassador”, Gift of Life’s first ambassador at Gardner-Webb. I applied and started training right after COVID started, held drives on campus, started social media pages, and gave presentations about the registry and what a difference anyone could be if they were a match. I felt like my time as a campus ambassador for Gift of Life and the Project Life Movement was not very successful due to the strict COVID regulations during my drives, several other factors, and just not huge numbers of students signing up. But, I progressively grew the donor circle. 

Well, fast forward a few years and I am no longer able to donate due to a health condition so I had to remove my name from the list. This past year one of the students I was able to reach during my time as an ambassador, matched and donated stem cells. She reached out to let me know. I am so proud of her and I really needed the reminder that sometimes you don’t see firsthand the differences that you make in people’s lives. Always be the change you wish to see in the world, no matter how small the change may seem at the time.

FYI This isn’t you agreeing to donate right now, a simple cheek swab will add your name to the bone marrow/stem cell registry and if there is ever a patient in need of a donation they will see if they match with anyone on the registry. If you do match, Gift of Life will reach out for further blood work or testing if needed and then pay for a flight, hotel, food, etc at their headquarters or wherever the donation is needed.
