What do I need to bring to a capoeira lesson?
Bring a water bottle and clothes you can move freely in! Athletic wear that’s somewhat form-fitting works best. For footwear, you can practice barefoot or wear athletic shoes with thin, flexible soles to avoid rolling your ankles. Regular students should plan to purchase a Capoeira uniform.
Do I need prior experience in dance or martial arts to join?
No, Capoeira is beginner-friendly and welcoming to everyone. The instructor guides students through the basics—stretching, simple kicks, defensive movements, and gentle cartwheels—at a pace that works for each person. Even those with no dance or fitness background can join, have fun, and build rhythm and strength over time.
What if I don’t like acrobatics or my body can’t handle them?
No worries! Capoeira has no “right” way to play. Your movements can be whatever feels good for you. You don’t need flips or fancy tricks to enjoy training—your game will always be your own! :)
Does Capoeira Gerais have a belt system?
Yes! In Capoeira Gerais, students wear colored cords with their uniforms to show their progression. Beginners start with a green cord (or no cord), and the journey continues up to white cords for masters. Advancement takes time, so the focus is on enjoying the process!
What is Batizado?
Formal induction happens at a batizado ceremony, often followed by a troca de cordas for students earning a new cord. These traditional ceremonies are celebrated by Capoeira groups worldwide and are usually held once a year.
