FUMC Salt and Light helps our faith community resist evil, injustice and oppression by promoting nonpartisan civic engagement in local, state and national government.
Linking our faith to civic affairs means knowing the process of how bills become laws in the Nebraska state legislature. Thank you to our allies for reproductive health, Planned Parenthood, for an informative Lobby Day, March 5, 2024.
Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. MLK, Jr.
In Nebraska, we are so fortunate to have allies who are working for human dignity and fairness for all! Take some time to explore some of these groups and get involved!!
We hope that members will take advantage of the various non-partisan advocacy groups that can provide up-to-date information on civic matters in our state and ways to advocate for and against. Some of those groups are:
Nebraska Appleseed neappleseed.org
League of Women Voters--Greater Omaha https://www.lwvgo.org/
Stand for Schools https://www.standforschools.org/
Civic Nebraska civicnebraska.org
Planned Parenthood plannedparenthoodaction.org
Open Sky Policy Institute openskypolicy.org

To find your state senator, go to Nebraska Legislature --Find your Senator. To email your senator, type in first initial, then last name@leg.ne.gov (example for Senator Megan Hunt: mhunt@leg.ne.gov)
Silence is not an option. The very fabric of our families and communities is being threatened, your voice can make a difference!
A highlight from one of our actions in 2023!! From youngers to elders, over 80 First UMC/Omaha folks signed letters to NE state senators March 5, 2023 urging our leaders to vote NO on LB 626, the anti-abortion bill. The letters were hand delivered on Wednesday during the Planned Parenthood Lobby Day, March 8, 2023.
