The difficulty scaling mechanic is the chosen means of ramping up the challenge of gameplay as time goes on.
When gameplay begins, Nibbles begins spinning on his wheel and picks up more speed the longer he remains spinning. (More of this is detailed in the "Gameplay" section.) As Nibbles breaks more speed thresholds, the speed pacing of the game will gain a "burst", suddenly picking up the pace and for every burst of speed causes the gameplay to become faster-paced, and more frequent and challenging obstacles to spawn.
There will be 5 "levels", or "difficulties" throughout the course of a full run in FUEL YOUR HAMSTER!! (one for every 20km threshold on the Speedometer).

As previously stated, for every speed threshold reached the gameplay pace gains a "burst" and becomes faster paced. This progress and transition is communicated through multiple means:
A brief speed effect graphic will overlay the gameplay with a subtle screen shake, driving the sudden "burst/change of speed".
A brief and quick message communicating the up in difficulty will cross the screen from the left, to the center of the screen for a moment, and then off to the right of the screen.
