Free Urban Extracurricular Learning Corporation (FUEL) is a nonprofit dedicated to serving students in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in extracurricular engagement.
From miniature electronic toys to computers to robots that collect rock samples on Mars, programming design is used everywhere. So, it's never too early to start teaching kids how to code! Using the Scratch visual programming language, volunteers at FUEL can help elementary school kids start seeing the basic blocks (literally!) of programming through FUEL's 6-week Scratch programming initiative.
Although we faced many challenges to our in-person learning as a result of the raging COVID-19 pandemic, our efforts to teach Scratch were by no means hindered! Over teleconferencing with students at home, we were able to share best practices for Scratch coding and make sure that students had a blast from the comfort of their own homes!
Most of code that we and our students make is uploaded to a Scratch club studio so that students have a chance to learn from other code and show off their own amazing code!
