The goal of the SAE Dashboard project is to design and implement a dashboard onto the internal combustion SAE 2018-2019 vehicle. The dashboard will allow digital performance data to be recorded and analysed so that the car can be tweaked to achieve higher performance, and allows the driver to easily see real-time information while driving.
Currently, the car has little to no real time information and cannot log data on the car’s performance. Therefore, the design engineers have to rely on computer simulations and more subjective testing. The simulations take time to do and since it is not a real world testing environment, the results are not as accurate as they would be if they were done in the real world. In addition, while driving, some important information, such as center of gravity, is not shown to the driver. This means that the driver cannot push the car to its safe limits, as those “limits” are currently obscure.
