Incandescent, the second album from Em Støy under the solo moniker Fryktelig Støy (Norwegian: ‘Horrible Noise’), is a contemplation of upheaval, death and motherhood refracted through a muscular blackened doom lens.
Weaving multiple themes and influences into her vision of ignition in darkness, flight and witchcraft, Støy refuses to be bound by the restrictions and conventions of genre.
Borrowing heavily from black metal, doom and post-rock, subtle and overt references to magic, transmutation, Satanism and existentialism permeate her Dionysian fury and creative ferment.
Incandescent ties together the paths of betrayal, grief and rediscovery — concluding in a contemplation of birth and guardianship. Grappling with the death of the self, while holding hope and adoration for one’s children, loneliness, solitude and intimacy are all examined in Støy’s characteristically evocative, bold and direct lyrical style.
With each track remaining distinct but linked, Støy pushes her voice and musicianship to even greater extremes than on debut Disappointment. Fast passages spiral and collapse into terrifying voids while held notes overlap. Angelic harmonies, horrifying screeches and demonic growls carry powerfully crafted lyrics.
Incandescent refracts the Luciferian tradition in a modern, personal and feminine bent. Becoming your own light-bringer, finding hope in decay and returning to the motif of the black wings of a fallen angel in different moments of destruction, bitterness and renewal.
Incandescent will be available in a limited physical edition of 200 from I, Voidhanger from 11 April 2025.
