Joint Zoom with Lincoln for Pride Month!
In honor of Pride Month, Lincoln and FRR hosted a joint Zoom event led by students of both school communities. Lincoln GSA (Gender Sexuality Alliance) students read Call Me Max by Kyle Lukoff. FRR 4th grader Eliza interviewed Lincoln 4th grader Noah on his personal experiences. Ms. Paysnick’s 6th grade students shared their lesson on how to support transgender students. FRR 7th grader Kayla read PRIDE: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag, by Rob Sanders

Guest speaker Reverend Dr. Kimberley Morrison, who has worked extensively for individuals living with housing instability read Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Pena.
She also discussed her experiences getting to know the community in Boston Commons as well as how she started an abbey in Canada to provide necessary services for unhoused people.

In honor of AAPI Heritage Month, former FRR students and current BHS seniors, Lily Lockwood and Sam Lee, shared how personal experiences with race and identity led them to take action addressing Asian-American discrimination in Brookline.
Sam and Lily led a discussion how they take action within an established group (BHS Asian Pacific American Club) and through the creation of their Social Justice Action Project. The latter program implements AAPI lessons into Brookline elementary curriculum and is being piloted in FRR's fourth grade classrooms this month.

FRR 1st grader Chelsea Oge read Standing on Her Shoulders by Monica Clark-Robinson and lead us in discussion about the trailblazing women in our lives who have made our futures possible. Well done Chelsea!

Spring Break Week! Thank you to Mrs. K for telling a Chinese folktale and leading an activity to make our own tangrams.
Thank you to our special guest and FRR math teather, Ms. Jillian Boucher who read The Girl With a Mind for Math: The Story of Raye Montague. We loved having Ms. Boucher talk about her own path as a female in the field of math and our discussion about how we can participate in breaking the barriers to racial and educational equity.
FRR 4th Grader, Jaede, and her older sister BHS Freshman (former FRR student), Jaelyn, shared how they speak up and lead with peaceful actions. They discussed the recent racist events at the high school and their role in the student led walk-out. This was an important conversation for our FRR readers & leaders and we are extremely grateful to have this space to talk about racial and social justice in our own community. As always we prioritize creating a safe and inclusive space for discussion.

Third grader Julia read Giraffes Can't Dance and led a discussion about embracing our differences, overcoming doubt, and finding ways to be yourself with whatever abilities you possess . Way to go Julia, we were honored to have you lead!
Our own 7th grade Science teacher Ms. Pascucci was our special guest reader and led us in discussing ways we can help save the planet in and out of school. Thanks Ms. Pascucci!
Ms. Hahn and the 4H class shared their class Women’s History Month poster project and led us in making our own “Shero” profiles.
FRR 4th grade teacher Ms. Hahn will read Who Says Women Can't Be Doctors? The Story of Elizabeth Blackwell by Tanya Lee Stone.
“I’ll bet you’ve met plenty of doctors in your life. And I’ll bet lots of them were women. Well, you might find this hard to believe, but there once was a time when girls weren’t allowed to be doctors.”
In honor of Women's History Month, the Readers & Leaders will also start a special poster project to engage the rest of the school community. Join us tonight to get involved!
MA State Representative Tommy Vitolo read A Bike Like Sergio's by Maribeth Boelts and taught us about our state government as we shared ideas on how we can get involved in helping our community!
FRR first grader Isha read “Words and your Heart” by Kate Jane Neal. She also shared about her project, Words for Warmth, in support of children currently in the custody of the Department of Children and Families. FRR mother-daughter team Sanjli and Leela will lead us in a blanket-making service project, No Sew Blankets for Change.
Blankets will be donated to the Brookline Food Pantry to support fellow community members.
In celebration of Black History Month, BU student and actor Tori Omoregie will lead us in an interactive poetry slam, and FRR student Aaliyah will perform an original poem entitled George Floyd.
To celebrate Lunar New Year. 8th graders Jiayan Guo and Esme Campbell and professional musicians He Tao and Yazhi Guo performed music, 4th grade teacher Ms. Hahn led us in a read along, and we all made Year of the Tiger bookmarks.
To honor Florida Ruffin Ridley's birthday (January 29, 1861), we welcome Public Schools of Brookline Superintendent Dr. Linus Guillory, Jr., whose career and service reflect the values of Ridley's own life and legacy.
Dr. Guillory will read Hidden Figures: The True Story of Four Black Women and the Space Race and share about his own time at NASA!
Brookline Select Board member and vice chair Dr. Raul Fernandez will read Dream Street, based on author Tricia Elam Walker's and illustrator Ekua Holmes' childhood neighborhood in Roxbury, MA.
Dr. Fernandez also shared about how our Town Government works and what we can do to get involved!
Martin Luther King was a hero and to honor him we read a book and shared a special MLK performance from our second graders at FRR!
We had two special guests this night: environmental attorney Deborah Brown and school nurse Anne Greenwald. Their partnership in activism led to the renaming of our school. They shared their work and advocacy as Brookline community leaders for racial, climate, and housing justice.
Deborah Brown was named a 2021 Brookline Woman of the Year. She is an environmental attorney, has held leadership roles with the US Environmental Protection Agency, and is a Town Meeting Member representing Precinct 1.
Anne Greenwald is a parent of two graduates of the former Devotion School and served as PTO President. She is a Boston Public Schools nurse and Town Meeting Member representing Precinct 8.
FRR 4th graders Sylvie and Freya will lead our Storytime and share about their involvement with Dressember, a foundation that works to end human trafficking. Come find out why they wear dresses for every day in December and have been supporting this impactful organization since they were in 1st grade!

Diwali Presentation and Celebration with Special Guests
FRR parents Sangeeta Shankar, Pooja Sharma, and Sanjli Gidwaney prepared a special presentation of the celebration of Diwali with facts, pictures, and a dance. A live demo featuring the creation of a Rangoli (sand art) was completed as the meeting took place and a special Diwali book was read by FRR first grader Neev Kapur. Thanks to all for sharing such a festive night!

Indigenous People's Day - Special Guest Speakers!
Dr. Abby Menter is a sister, daughter, aunt, cousin, friend, and teacher. She is a professor at Sinte Gleska University and is a public policy fellow for NDN Collective. She is also a doctoral candidate at the University of Minnesota.
Ms. Tara Harrington Seibel is co-director at Design for Change USA along with FRR parent Sanjli Gidwaney. She lives on the Rosebud Reservation, the ancestral lands of the Sicangu Sioux.
They will be speaking on Indigenous assets and the importance of Native representation, including the history of Indigenous People’s Day and the current work in South Dakota to undo the erasure of Indigenous history in classrooms. Check out this map that Dr. Abby and Ms. Tara shared to discover the indigenous roots of where you call home today and find out how Massachusetts got it's name.
