The ceiling is made of concrete and steel, pipes crisscrossing just below the dull beams. They hiss with steam and rumble, carrying warm water and oxygen. Though while staring at the roof of this chamber, the eyes of two others in the room burn holes in his face, waiting for the answer to the question: ‘what is your name?’
It was simple enough, he knew that much, but just thinking about it causes the lump on his head to vibrate with pain. He can feel it on the tip of his tongue, heavy with importance, but a shadow in his memory. He lets it fall naturally.
“Ilyas… I think.”
His voice feels hoarse, like he hasn't used it in a while, but it wasn't deep or heavy.
"You think?"
It's a woman who spoke, she was dressed in white clothes. Light and clean, with an iridescent apron tied around her front. She holds a tablet of some kind in her hand. Her face is concerned, though nervous.
Ilyas doesn’t have the energy to answer, letting the pipes fill the silence, unwilling to cover the wayward whisper. "What kind of name is Ilyas?" He snuggles deeper into the many blankets that covered his body. They were disappointedly cold.
“Do you know where you are, Ilyas?” She asks.
“No.” He answers, as his eyes drift across the ceiling. He was not familiar at all with this room, let alone where the room was located. It felt alien, and he found that he could not picture a place that did feel familiar.
“Do you know your bunker number?”
“No.” Ilyas didn’t even know what that question was asking. He was still trying to process what was going on with his head. It felt as if he was trying to pull water from a flowing well, with a bucket that always came back empty.
“Do you know what day it is?” She continues. Her voice sounded stressed, and Ilyas wishes he could give her an answer.
He hears a door open, and both he, the woman and the other nurse in the room turn to look. Two men stand in the door, one is very clearly escorting the other.
Plans:
The man escorting the other is Einar, and the man being escorted is called Aiden, a Runner on Einar's team. It's been a week since Ilyas was brought to the facility, and since then Einar has had to go back out to complete the mission they where forced to abandon in order to bring Ilyas to their bunker safely. Aiden has gotten frostburn on the tips of his fingers and Einar is bringing him to get medical attention.
Both nurses go to focus on Aiden, and ask Einar to watch over Ilyas, telling him that he either has extreme memory loss, or is just a really good actor. Ilyas is familiar with frostburn, and latches onto that familiarity, asking how the other man got it.
Einar mentions how unpredictable the weather has been getting over the last few weeks, and Ilyas is a tad concerned. Einar reads over Ilyas' previous answers and continues to ask him about what he knows, Runners are brought up and Einar briefly explains what they are. Ilyas' recorded temperature is mentioned as normal, but still climbing.
The scene ends when one of the nurses come back to watch over Ilyas so that Einar can focus on his teammate's condition.
Einar eventually takes on Ilyas as his responsibility, and has him work on his team until he can get his memory back. Einar is asked to keep an eye on him and teaches Ilyas about life in the bunker. As they continues to work out in the cold, the weather grows more dangerous and a few of the animals begin acting strangely...
