From the Ground Up is a learning and design experiment, which aims to support Black leaders in grassroots organisations and initiatives to find their voice and build their confidence to lead in influencing, advocating and creating community-led change at the intersection of air pollution, health and environment.
Our environment and the air we breathe are crucial to our quality of life. Lambeth and Southwark communities face serious health issues due to high pollution levels and poor local air quality.
Research from Impact on Urban Health shows that Black African and Caribbean communities are disproportionately affected. These residents often live and work in busy areas with higher pollution levels, which aggravates existing health conditions and causes new ones. This underscores the need for targeted interventions and policy changes in these boroughs to improve air quality and public health.
Despite these impacts, Black people have historically been marginalized in conversations and decision-making processes related to air pollution and other environmental issues.
In this multi-phase project, we are working with individuals in the communities most affected by these issues to create, test, and build solutions. We believe there is immense knowledge and passion within Black communities. This project is an individual and collective journey to tap into that wisdom and use it to build abundant futures for Black communities.
To catalyse a community-led and owned venture, which activates leaders into environmental missions.
Creating and testing a nourishing and immersive experience aimed at growing leaders confidence and connections to knowledge, people, ideas and action.
Rooted by Design (Rooted) is a strategic design and futures studio, deeply committed to transforming the experiences Black communities have of life and society.
A home to researchers, designers, strategists and problem solvers - we work at the intersection of communities and civic and public institutions, conceiving and making real the opportunities for change, whilst supporting transition from challenges of the present, to the possibilities of the future.
