The Ruler of the Sea

All is dark and Triton is staring into an abyss without an ounce of light. He feels the water around him growing colder. He senses something coming and blinks repeatedly as if that will help him see better through the black water. In a flash, he's blinded by a golden light, when his eyes finally catch up, he sees his father swimming past with typhoon-like speed and the source of the golden light in hand illuminating the water. Poseidon collides headfirst with a beast, one that Triton hasn't seen in any of the seven seas.

More creatures emerge and the glow around Poseidon begins to fade. Triton swims towards the battle and all grows dark again. Disoriented by this overwhelming darkness Triton speeds toward the surface to find light only to feel the pressure around him getting heavier, "this shouldn't be..." Thinking he must be headed in the wrong direction and unable to see, Triton stops and swims in the opposite direction, but the pressure continues to build. He attempts to will the water around him to guide him but receives no answer. In desperation, he screams for compliance, "Yield to me!"

Triton then startled awake when some of the mermen on guard outside his royal bed chambers came to check on him having heard his unconscious screams. Triton dismissed them and then thought to himself, "The golden light, the trident?" The King of the Ocean wielded it in his dream, it had to be the one of legend the one used to battle the Titans. He had heard all the ancient stories but didn't know their exact authenticity, many said the weapon was a fish tale. Then he thought to himself, "It was just a dream..." He laughed, "If only it were that easy, they're never just dreams but prophecies, visions of things to come. Unless I-... I must send someone I trust to find Proteus and confirm these visions." He called one of his men back into his bed chambers, "Find me my half brother Perseus, tell him it is dire and I request his audience at once." The guard left hastily and Triton muttered to himself "...the equilibrium of seven seas is in jeopardy."

Triton left alone with his thoughts began to play the dream over and over in his head. He needed to work through this dream, analyze its meaning and figure out the next steps to take. Finally, he thought, "First I will send Percy to find Proteus and confirm these visions, but I must devise a concrete plan if these visions prove true; then and then and only then will I bring this up with father. He gets quite angry when I come to him with problems without also potential solutions."

THE TRIDENT OF LEGEND

The trident that the son of Poseidon, Triton, had glimpsed in his dream was the magical, golden, storm-raising trident of legend. This weapon was forged by the elder Cyclopes to help Poseidon during the Titanomachy. The Titanomachy was the legendary battle between the Titans and the Gods of Olympus, led by Zeus after freeing Hades and Poseidon to gain control and free the other Greek Gods. The elder Cyclopes were three, single-eyed, immortal giants, the children of Uranus and Gaea, locked into the earth by their father and then thrown into Tartarus by their Titan siblings. Poseidon never forgot about how they aided him and his siblings with the weapons needed to defeat the Titans and has looked after them since the Titanomachy. The trident made for Poseidon has the power over the sea, creating tsunamis and waves, along with seafoam. With it, he can calm the water or make it roar. Earthquakes occur with one swift strike of Poseidon's trident against the ocean floor.

Authors Note:

This first story I used as a bridge to bring together all the important figures in my Storybook: Perseus, Triton, Poseidon. I wanted to make Triton my central figure and then layer in Perseus in the next story while adding more lore including lineage, descendants, and alliances. This bridges how Poseidon's forces learn about an impending danger. I wanted to also add some important background on the trident and also some mysticism in the context of how much Triton understands about it. As you can tell Triton had not yet seen it in his lifetime and had only heard stories of its legend. The trident is not only a great source of Poseidon's strength but it is also a symbol of his strength so what should happen if it were gone? Who or what would control the sea? Is Poseidon Poseidon even without the trident?

I have a hard time knowing what people do and do not know about Greek myth. I grew up on Greek and Roman myth, learning about it in school and then reading fantasy books like "The Lightning Theif" Sometimes I forget that a potential reader might not know everything I know. I did my best to concisely explain what the reader may not know in reference to the Titanomachy and the trident.

Side note: I attempted to change everything after the dream back to past tense... I also tried to add more background lore that gives suspicion to the trident and makes it seem that this is Triton's first interaction (even though it's unconscious) with the weapon.
