As he faded in and out of consciousness he saw his siblings falling towards Tartarus as he hurdled opposite, towards the earth. With the land approaching quickly, Oceanus tried to will the sea to come to his embrace but the water did not respond almost as if it did not recognize him and so he fell. Seconds before crashing into the ground a large wave swallowed him whole and carried him over the earth and into the north Pacific. There he unconsciously sank for what would've seemed like days had he been awake, a depth that appeared to know no ends.
A voice in the dark called out to him... almost as if serenading him out from his slumber. He didn't know the voice but it was cold, not the type of cold that made one fearful but the enchanting type of cold one experiences being inside a glacier. Slowly he woke, battered and bruised, having survived the Olympians within inches of his life. He felt himself sinking deeper and deeper as if in a descending limbo. He willed the water to hold him still but again it did not respond so instead he asked the voice in the dark for its help, "I beseech your mercy" and all of a sudden he floated motionlessly.
The voice in the dark began to serenade him again, telling him of a story of a time before even he and his Titan brothers and sisters existed. The tale spoke of a beautiful girl unknown to the world but was the daughter of the great Pontus, the primordial god of the sea, and Nyx the primordial goddess of night. Their union brought forth the deepest, darkest parts of the world for which they gave to their daughter and named after her, Mariana. They also gave her dominion over the mightiest creatures the world had never seen which resided with her in this trench as her only companions. Mariana had never left, had never ventured anywhere shallow enough to see the light. Her spirit felt the great Oceanus dropping towards the earth and at that moment caught him with a great wave. As she finished her song she sang of her loneliness, "born of water and darkness: my domain seems to know no end. I long to see the surface but I am stopped by my fear of the light."
Oceanus now knew exactly how fate had swung in his direction and began to charm the naïve and ever so ignorant Mariana singing back to her about the world above the waves. He sang, "If only I had the strength if only I could be nursed back to health could I make your wishes come true." He sang to her, "The world is full of new, young, dangerous gods, the cause of my pain and suffering." Explaining that even if they made it to the surface they would get torn to shreds without defense. "If only we had some mighty creatures to protect us from the evil gods, especially the one named Poseidon, then could I show you around the beautiful light-filled world." He then sang of the armies of Poseidon, that even if they had mighty creatures would they need more, they would need divine aid. "If only I had a way to contact those loyal to myself and bring them all together, surely we would be safe to explore the world."
Mariana did not sing in return but remained quiet for a long time in the darkness, thinking about Oceanus' proposal. She then spoke plainly and said, "I am ready to see the light". With that Oceanus began to formulate his plan, unbeknownst to Mariana that he was plotting a Thassalomachy to avenge his pride and take back the ocean from Poseidon.
