Hello Girl Scouts! In this Patch Program you will be learning the basics of Ultimate Frisbee. This badge is geared towards brownies and juniors but could be fun for any age. We have laid out the requirements and directions for completing this badge below in easy step-by-step instructions. You can begin by watching our first video and continue from there. We have also included notes for troop leaders, information on what you will need, a place where you can purchase the badges once you have completed the requirements, and some additional information about how you can continue playing frisbee! If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact us at Frisbeegirlscoutbadge@gmail.com. We hope that you have as much fun completing this badge as we had making it!
This badge was created by 3 cadettes in troop 60001 for our Silver Award project. We came up with this idea because we love frisbee and we want younger girls to be exposed to it as well, so they can enjoy it too!
You can start this badge by navigating to the videos section by either pressing the button below or by using the hamburger menu on mobile, or top tabs on computers (optimized for computers). Follow the instructions that go along with each video until you have watched women's ultimate game. Then navigate to the games section and complete one or more of the provided games. Finally, go back to the videos tab and watch spirit of the game. Once you have completed the requirements you can order the physical badges by going to the badges page. Please fill out the google form at the bottom of this page to give us feedback when you have completed the badge.
The whole badge should take about 1 to 2 meetings to complete
Learn the basic rules of ultimate
Learn how to throw a backhand and flick correctly
Learn how to catch correctly
Watch a portion of a professional or semi-professional ultimate game (AUDL), (WAFC), (PUL), or college game
Learn and participate in 1 ultimate related game e.g. schtick, tic tac toe toss, zombie ect.
Learn about the spirit of the game
5-15 frisbees (we recommend these regulation frisbees but pretty much any frisbees that you have will work)
Cones for whichever game you choose to do
Note: For this badge you will need access to an open indoor or outdoor area where the girls can throw (indoor if raining, windy, or excessively cold)
Need equipment? No problem! GUM (Girls Ultimate Movement) has kits that you can apply for. These kits contain everything that you will need to complete our badge. You can apply here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1DBx1fjCCFZR6AKVG2eBwfru4pQjHbXrOzoI2OuJqcrQ/viewform?edit_requested=true Just make sure to mention that you would like the kit to complete the Girl Scout Ultimate Frisbee badge with your troop.
*if your troop is in service unit 60-4 all of the materials needed are located in the service unit shed
If there is extra time at the end troop leaders can set up cones into two end zones then have the girls split up into teams and participate in a real ultimate game.
Try to schedule the badge around windy days and rain. Wind can make ultimate extremely frustrating for younger girls. If the day planned happens to be windy some tricks include releasing the disc lower and adding more spin. To make the experience as fun as possible we recommend completing this badge inside a gym or other indoor open space if it is a windy day.
Almost all youth ultimate leagues start in middle school so some of the younger girls may have to wait a couple years to play officially on a team. There may be a couple opportunities to play for elementary schoolers such as GUM, Girls Ultimate Movement. Older juniors (5th graders) who live in Arlington are eligible for YULA in order to increase gender diversity within the program.
YULA (Youth Ultimate League of Arlington)
If you live in Arlington this is the youth program for you! YULA has an awesome youth program for girls starting as young as fifth grade. There are options for middle schoolers to play in both the fall and the spring with YULA. Most players will be put with other kids from their middle school, but they may be moved around by request. Each team is coached by an experienced volunteer ultimate player. YULA is a great opportunity to play frisbee at whatever level you are at and meet kids from around the county who also have an interest in ultimate.
If you do not live in Arlington, don’t worry as there are also other frisbee leagues:
