This technology usage is accurate for the time. On statistics gathered for social media usaged in 2016, 97% of online adults aged 16-64 said they'd visited or used a social network within the last month. Facebook specifically was used by 79% of all internet users and 68% of U.S. adults. 8/10 internet users used their mobile devices to visit/use social networks. Facebook had 1.79 billion active Facebook users and 1.66 billion of them were mobile active users. The average Facebook user had 130 friends. The frequent phone and social media usage in the film makes sense given social media trends.

6:10: Laura and her friends use Facebook to browse images online. Marina uses Facebook to message Laura. Laura's friends ridicule Marina for having zero friends online, while Laura defends Marina. Laura is able to browse Marina's art and animations through her Facebook page.
8:40:This is the start of Marina's obsession with Laura. As Marina watches her page, she is excited to see that Laura has added her as a friend.
10:10: Marina uses Facebook to spam Laura with messages.
12:20 Laura reading a ton of messages she’s received on Facebook Messenger. Marina continues spamming her and commenting on all her old posts.
13:15: Laura and her friends use Facebook to investigate Marina and they find creepy and disturbing videos on her page.
14:40: Laura’s friend count continues rising and she gets a video call from Marina on her laptop, who wishes her a happy birthday. Laura lies to Marina and tells her she’s just spending her birthday with Tyler, when in reality, she intends to celebrate with many of her friends.
16:19: Laura is tagged in several of her friends’ photos from the night of her birthday party, and Marina sees all of the pictures of Laura spending her birthday with a ton of friends.
18:45: Laura calls Tyler and tells him about the incident where Marina confronts her about lying about her birthday, and he tries to comfort Laura. Marina tries to video call Laura again during the conversation, and then Laura rejects the call on her computer and finds a ton of frantic Facebook messages from Marina, who is trying to get her back as a friend. Laura unfriends Marina, and Marina, watching her computer, sees zero friends on her page.
23:10: Several students are using laptops in the lecture hall.
1:11: It is discovered that Marina filmed her suicide on her webcam, and the video was uploaded to the university's website. Students downloaded it before it was taken down. The professor urges students not to watch video and he warns that students will be suspended for sharing it.
2:08: Laura watches jumpscare kitten video on Facebook that her roommate sent her.
2:36: We see a montage of videos from Laura’s page. Then it shows her adding a bunch of friends on Facebook. We see more videos and shots of her friend count rising. We see Laura posting messages on her page and a bunch of pictures she posted. Then we see her boyfriend Tyler’s page.
5:20: The professor lectures the class about internet addiction disorder.
5:40: Laura is texting during class with her boyfriend, and the professor calls her out as an example of internet addiction disorder
24:23: We learn that all information about Marina has been deleted from the school database and her swipe card hasn’t been activated all weekend. They start questioning if Marina is even her real name.
25:00: Laura gets a message notification from Marina (after her death). Her phone dies so she checks from her laptop and she finds that Marina’s account sent her a video of her suicide. Errors pop up when Tyler attempts to close the video.
26:25: Laura starts to lose a few Facebook friends. She starts getting messages asking why she posted the video and checking her page, she finds that her account has posted the video. An error occurs when she tries to delete the video and Marina is back in Laura’s friend list. People comment on the video who are upset and disgusted that she would post such a thing.
27:52: The police confront Laura about the video and Marina’s suicide and tell her to delete her profile if she can’t delete the video.
28:40: Laura is on the phone with Facebook tech support after she can’t delete the video or her account. Tech support cannot see her profile or help her delete it.
29:30: Laura’s friend Kobe tries to help Laura, and the two of them look at Marina’s Facebook page which is full of new creepy videos. Kobe looks at the code of the page which is full of spooky and cryptic symbols due to Marina's "hacking".
30:57: As Laura is staring at her laptop, Tyler tells her to just stop looking at her page and stop thinking about her. Marina’s account continues posting new pictures.
32:14: Gustavo is talking on the phone while using his laptop and the phone connection cuts out. His laptop screen starts glitching and turns off. His reflection in the screen stops matching his movements. He uses his phone as a flashlight because the lights stop working. He starts taking a video of a creepy room he finds. He keeps using his phone to look around after the elevator stops working. All of these strange occurences were due to Marina, who uses her supernatural influence to kill him.
38:54: Laura and Tyler are looking at Gustavo’s memorial Facebook page. Tyler tells her to stop looking at Facebook, as it is only causing her more distress.
39:33: Laura’s phone gets a notification, with the sound slightly distorted. Kobe tells her to check her profile, ASAP. Laura checks her page and finds that it has posted a video of Gustavo’s death. Errors occur when she tries to delete it. Laura’s roommate tells her to delete her account. Laura tries to make a post claiming she’s not posting these things, then the text deletes itself and changes to “u will know how it feels to be lonely :)” The text won’t get deleted. Everyone in the comments are mad at Laura, her friend count continues to drop. Laura gets suspended from school because of the posts.
41:19: Laura video calls her mother then goes to talk to Kobe. He notices that Marina friended Gus before he died. The two watch the video of Gus’s death.
44:22: Kobe is alone in the computer lab doing research. He’s looking at Marina’s page which is still posting new content. It continues to cut back to this scene over the next couple minutes.
46:23: The owner of orphanage that Marina came from tells Laura that Marina would stare at the computer for hours, with nothing on the screen.
46:52: Kobe starts looking up Black mirrors. (For a brief moment, Black Mirror, the show, is visible as one of the search results) he learns about witchcraft and rituals associated with black mirrors. Marina causes all of the computers in the lab to glitch and start displaying creepy videos, until the janitor enters.
48:07: Tyler is posting Facebook comments to defend Laura. His computer starts glitching mid comment due to Marina's supernatural influence.
49:00: Laura uses her phone to research news articles about Saddle Mills. She calls Tyler and asks him to try to find Marina’s hospital records and to try to find a way to contact someone related to Marina.
50:43: Laura’s roommate Olivia looks at her laptop and discovers that Izzy is now friends with Marina on Facebook. In Izzy’s hospital room, her phone stops working due to Marina's supernatural influence.
53:57: Laura and the police look at camera footage of Izzy walking around the hospital before her death. They question her about where she got the elevator footage of Gus’s death. They mention they couldn’t find any IP address associated with the post.
55:00: Laura continues losing Facebook friends. A video of Izzy’s death appears on her page. The comments on the video are mean and full of threats towards Laura.
55:41: Olivia tries to delete her own Facebook account, an error pops up when she attempts to. Tyler attempts to delete his account and gets the same error. Kobe also attempts and fails to delete his account. Kobe then tries to unfriend Laura and gets an error again.
56:29: Tyler searches the medical database at the hospital he works for information about Marina. He find’s her mother’s name and address.
57:01: Tyler and Laura are looking at pages online about rituals and black mirrors. They realize Marina’s laptop was her black mirror, and that it acts as the catalyst for her supernatural powers that she uses to torment Laura and her friends.
58:30: Olivia’s printer starts printing out spooky black pages full of moving white glitchy text. This is due to Marina's supernatural powers.
1:00:35: Laura shows up late for the funeral of her friends. Others say mean things to her as she walks in. She loses more Facebook friends. (She’s down to 79 as of this timestamp) Laura’s mother asks why everyone is talking about here.
1:01:20: Tyler and Laura look up old news clips about the Moore’s Grove fires online. They discover Marina’s mother was kept alive long enough to give birth to Marina. Marina’s Facebook account starts posting pictures of Olivia.
1:03:93: Olivia finds her computer turned on and glitching out. The screen turns off. This is due to supernatural hacking from Marina.
1:04:42: After Olivia jumps out of their apartment and ends up in the hospital, Laura’s friend count drops to 21. Laura discovers that Olivia is now Facebook friends with Marina.
1:05:43: Laura uses a map app on her phone to guide Kobe as they drive to Moore’s Grove where she think’s Marina’s laptop is. Tyler calls Laura while he’s talking to the police, who are trying to locate Laura.
1:08:02: The police officer guarding Olivia’s room is distracted while on a phonecall with his wife. Meanwhile Olivia’s medical equipment starts glitching out and she gets possessed by Marina. She attacks him while he’s distracted.
1:10:01: Kobe’s phone gets a distorted sounding notification and his phone starts glitching out when he looks at it, then turns off. This is due to supernatural "hacking" from Marina.
1:14:20: Tyler tries to call Laura as he’s driving to find her, the call goes to voicemail.
1:15:40: Laura uses her phone to seek out information on Saddle Mills. She is able to find an image that looks like the nearby factory.
1:16:57: Laura calls Tyler and texts him the address she is going to but the audio of the call is distorted on Tyler’s end.
1:18:50: Laura uses her phone as a flashlight as she searches the factory. She receives a video call from her mom who is being haunted by Marina. She watches her mom walk away with a knife before the video cuts out.
1:26:18: Laura is sitting all alone in the lunchroom with her laptop, now socially outcast, with no friends in real life or online. Her Facebook page now looks a lot like Marina’s page, with a spooky aesthetic and her name written as Lau Ra (similar to Ma Rina).
