Math Pedagogy

What Does Effective Math Instruction Look Like?

National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. (2014).

Principles to actions: Ensuring mathematical success for all.

Our Overall Structure

At every meeting, we will:

  • Do math together (All participants will experience problem solving techniques they can use with their students)

  • Create opportunities for meaningful connections and discussions between participants

  • Address: How do we collect and leverage data?

Questions We Will Investigate:

  • How do we get kids started with problem solving?

      • What makes a good problem?

      • What are common pitfalls? What do we do if kids get stuck?

      • How do we know if we are making progress?

      • General resources/research on problem solving

  • How do we get kids to share their thinking?

      • How do we pick which students’ work to showcase?

      • How do we get students to engage with each other’s thinking?

  • How does student work guide instruction and next steps?

      • How can we leverage student work to reach the rigor of the standards?

      • How can we use the discussion/share out to provide access for all students?
