LAKESIDE LINK CREW

Freshman Academy - Link Crew Initiative

National research indicates that a student's attendance, grades, and behavior in ninth grade can predict whether the child will likely graduate or will likely drop out. According to the journal Education, ninth graders have the most missed classes, lowest grade point average, and more misbehavior referrals than any other high-school grade level. Unfortunately, the number of students who do not recover from these missteps is increasing every year. The National High School Center states that "more students fail ninth grade than any other grade in high school, and a disproportionate number of students who are held back in ninth grade subsequently drop out."

In response to the nationwide increase in high school dropouts, in 2015 Lakeside High School organized freshman teachers into a venture called Freshman Academy. This research-based organizational approach created a school within a school to ease the transition from eighth grade to ninth grade in hopes of reducing freshman retention. After a single year, the number of freshmen failing one or more classes after the first academic semester dropped from 58 percent to 33 percent.

While data continues to show that the failure rate may be dropping due to our Freshman Academy efforts, we continue to see a harmful trend with our freshmen student attendance and behavior. In researching those schools who have met the issues of poor student attendance and poor student behavior successfully, we found one common denominator among those schools - LINK CREW.

Link Crew is an effective, proven mentoring program that will infuse our strong Freshman Academy approach with a much-needed mentoring piece that will emphasize support and connection with our freshmen classes. At the beginning of each new school year, the Link Crew program trains juniors and seniors to be leaders for freshmen students. The purpose of this mentorship is to give these freshmen a social anchor at school, and in doing so,reducing freshman absences and freshman discipline referrals. Since Link Crew is the nations most studied and researched transition program, we have chosen it as the mentoring program for our already-strong Freshman Academy.

Not only has Link Crew proven effective in addressing student attendance and behavior, it also provides a structure in which students make real connections with each other thus increasing school safety and reducing incidence of bullying with anti-bullying education. Link Crew helps freshmen learn that people at school care about them and their success.
