Food flavors

Flavors in French are called "le parfum" or "la saveur".

To indicate a flavor, use the formula [noun] à [le/la /l'/les flavor]

• une glace à la vanille
  a vanilla ice cream

• un gâteau au chocolat
  a chocolate cake

• une tarte aux pommes
  an apple pie/tart

However, do remember that à can morph depending on what's following:

Note: using the plural for the flavor only really work with fruits. It usually indicates real pieces of fruit rather than fruits mixed in. At your level, the difference isn't that important and I would accept both :) 

Food composition

In English, there isn't much difference since you just put the flavor or composition as an adjective before the noun. But in French, we will make a difference between an added flavor or the actual composition of the thing.

Consider for instance the difference between a fruit juice vs. a fruit icecream. A fruit juice is litterally a product made out of the juice of fruit. An icecream is made out of cream, in which we added a flavor (with pieces of fruits or by infusing the cream with something.)

If you want to specify the composition of the thing, use the [noun] de [composition]. 

• un jus d'orange

• une purée de chou-fleur
  a cauliflower puree

Note: The second noun can take a plural mark IF you consider more than one type of said item was used. 

• un jus de fruit = one type of fruit was used (apples? oranges?)

• un jus de fruits = the juice is a mix of different fruits (apples and bananas, for instance).

• une salade de tomate = a salad made of several identical tomatoes

• une salade de tomates = a salade made of different kind of tomatoes (yellow, green, red, cherries...)

• des choux de bruxelles (m) = Brussells sprouts

• des petits pois (m) = green peas

• le raisin = grapes

• un abricot = an apricot

• un chou = a cubbage

• un chou-fleur = a cauliflower

• un concombre = a cucumber

• un haricot = a bean

In truth, it is not so strick - for instance sac vs. sachet or  paquet vs. boîte vs. carton... sometimes it can be hard to choose. But you'll notice with time that there are some collocations that are more common than others.
