Creating an Atmosphere That Supports Learning
I once heard a student say, “At school, I need a pass to go to the bath- room, but at 3:00, I’m an assistant manager at McDonald’s.”
Come on. What are we teaching our kids?
I once shadowed a student at a school I was visiting, and I really felt that lack of respect and trust as I sat by him in class and walked with him through the halls. By the end of the day, I was exhausted, confused, and had the worst headache I’d had in years. I couldn’t believe how much he was talked at and the meaning- less stops and starts of it all. Nothing in his day was connected to any- thing else, and nothing gave him (or me) the sense that our presence was valued or that our voices were really heard.
