Life is not always fair and sometimes it is downright hard. It is normal to have a terrible, rotten, no good, very bad day every once in a while, but how you choose to start the next day is a true testament of your character. You are somebody, you are powerful and you are strong. You can do this!

Learn to do your part. Treat others as you would have them treat you. Everyone makes mistakes, learn from them. Discover your passion, talent or gift, and try to not waste it. Choose your life partner well.

Remember all the kids who were criticized in school for being a "try-hard"? Well, those kids will one-day be the boss who will be making decisions about who to hire and how much to pay them. College is your second chance to be a "try-hard". You are now competing for your future career. You need to do better than slightly above average. You need to stand-out. Your GPA will tell future employers quite a bit about you. Puedes hacerlo.

The path you've taken and the skills you've acquired and refined to get to this point have adequately set you up for this next step. So, while acclimating to your new life and surroundings may come with its own challenges, be confident in your ability to rise to the occasion. Don't just blend in; stand up, stand out, and others will follow YOUR lead. You're a Bulldog; you've got this!

Although success is very sweet, we must remember that failure and disappointments are also a part of the obstacles we encounter as we find our way to success. Accept failure with grace and dignity, be confident that a mistake, a bad grade, or a bit of unhappiness never defines who we are or the success we will be. Use any disappointments as an opportunity to reflect, grow, revise, and restart as you travel to achieving your goals. My mom always said, "As much as I would like to, I cannot take away all of the disappointments that you may face because disappointments are what give you the resilience to face future challenges." With that said, may your disappointments be few and your days be filled with love, learning, success, and happiness!

Don’t take yourself, your decisions, your outcomes or even your mistakes too seriously. Life is open-ended, subject to a million contingencies and constant change. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make plans, but be open to change. Take risks, and learn to fail. Your failures will teach you more than any success and know that it’s okay to take a different path then you had planned. Be open to each opportunity and use them to grow.

To the wonderful Class of 2020: There is nothing I can say to make this situation any better for you, I will never understand how you feel. My heart goes out to you. However, I am sure you do feel ripped off from all the happy milestones and events you are supposed to experience. This is supposed to be a happy time for high school seniors who are moving onto another chapter in their life. Allow yourself to have these feelings, but know they won't last forever. This too shall pass. Even though all of your happy events were cancelled or postponed it is so very important to remember that nothing can take away all that you have accomplished over the past four years. Let this situation that no one has ever experienced bond you all and give you a shared identity that you will talk about forever. You are resilient, you will surpass the obstacles and adjust. You are still young and have an exciting journey to encounter. Appreciate what is there and pay attention to details and the windows of opportunity. Oh the Stories, you will have great stories. And one day you will get to share those stories with your grandchildren. And you will laugh and laugh together!

Much of life is about perspective. Is the glass half-empty or half-full? Our circumstances do not define us. We always get to choose how to respond to life. Jobs may come and go, friends may come and go, health may come and go, but how will you respond to those changes? Having a healthy perspective will go a long way in securing the best future possible, no matter what lies ahead. And…...giving people fistbumps might be just what they need to see the glass as half-full :)

1. College is the perfect place to figure out who you are. Whoever you were here? You can be someone completely different next year, for better or worse.
2. Don’t snap, tweet, Instagram, or Facebook anything you wouldn’t feel comfortable showing your mom, your boss, or a cop.
3. Your life plan may change five times between this graduation and your next. That’s OK.
4. Don’t wear your letterman jacket or your ID lanyard around your neck. It’s the mark of a freshman.
5. Call your parents. They miss you.

Every decision you make during this next phase, whether it be educational, or life centered, will offer you a lesson that will support your goals. The lessons you learn from the tough decisions will make the most difference. Keep pushing forward! Your focus may change as these life lessons help you grow. It's ok to change course. Dear Class of 2020 - Here is some of the best advice I never took...
1 - Be honest with yourself about your strengths and weaknesses and find something that fulfills and drives you to be the best you. Really THINK about what you are interested in and what you enjoy. Go toward that path to find your passion.
2 - Try everything - even a job that you believe to be beneath you. Learn at least one thing from every experience to take with you in your heart and mind along your life's journey.
3 - Save half of the money you make. That's right - half.
4 - Realize that this is the ONLY time you will be this age and free of responsibility. Take advantage of it. You will be working THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. Enjoy the now.
5 - Be proud of yourself and your accomplishments. Remember to thank those who helped you along the way.

Don't just follow your dreams; Chase them. Be optimistic. Always look for the best in those around you. Build relationships. Work hard. Do what you know is right, even when it is not easy. Be kind. Life is a struggle. It will be a struggle for you at times and you never know what struggles others are facing. Find those who will build you up and do the same for them. Take chances. Laugh. Go where your wings take you, even if you are not always sure what the next step will be. Have faith in yourself. Give lots of hugs. And throughout the whole adventure, remember your teachers at Freedom. We are cheering you on.

I wish someone would have told me how fast time goes! As you get older, each moment becomes more precious than the one before, and staying in the moment is the only way to truly experience joy in life. So my advice is to practice staying in the moment. If you can do that, you won't miss a thing! Congrats!

You all have a "bubble" that you've lived in so far. Your Freedom Area education has given you a unique experience, but it has sheltered you from people and experiences different from our own. Leaving that Freedom community bubble can be hard; whether you are heading to the military, the work force, or continuing your education; life will seem different now. My advice is to have an open mind. Actively experience all that you can. Make yourself uncomfortable by taking opportunities that you have never had before. Maybe your path will lead you back to the "Freedom bubble" one day. Maybe it won't. Have fun finding out!

Life does not always follow along the well define map that you design. You will experience the highs and lows, the difficult and the easy and unfortunately there may be times of too much difficulty and not enough smooth sailing. Your true success will be defined by what you do with the ride over both the smooth flowing highway and the bumpy back roads. You can put on the breaks and pull off to the side because "this isn't part of my plan", or you can continue to enjoy the ride. My advice to each of you: enjoy the ride….wherever it may take you. If you take a chance to enjoy the ride, you may just find yourself in unexpected and maybe even exciting locations.

Remain positive in all that you do. You never know who needs your sunshine! Always look for your "why" in all that you do because it will drive your success and passion. Try new things and keep an open mind about anything in life that comes your way; sometimes, life takes us in unconventional paths and we have to pivot and adjust.
