This Privacy Policy explains what data the FreeCamper mobile application ("FreeCamper", "the app", "we", "us", "our") collects, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the choices and rights you have. It is written to be read — not to hide things in fine print.
The app is published by Walabok LLC, a Texas limited liability company. You can reach us about anything in this policy at walabokllc@gmail.com.
By using FreeCamper you agree to this Privacy Policy and to our Terms of Use at https://sites.google.com/view/freecampterms/home.
For people who just want the short version:
We don't make you create an account. We don't collect your name, phone number, or email.
We send your approximate location to public mapping and weather APIs so we can show you nearby campsites, weather, and conditions. We don't store your location history.
We show ads through Google AdMob, and we process subscriptions through Google Play Billing. Both collect identifiers under their own policies.
We don't sell your personal data. Ever.
You can stop all data collection by uninstalling the app.
You can email us at walabokllc@gmail.com to request access, correction, or deletion of any data we hold about you.
The full details are below.
Walabok LLC ("we") is the data controller responsible for the personal data we process through FreeCamper.
Entity: Walabok LLC
Jurisdiction: Texas, USA
Contact for all privacy matters: walabokllc@gmail.com
If you are in the EU, UK, or EEA: you may contact us at the email above for any data-protection question, including to request access, correction, deletion, restriction, portability, or objection under the GDPR / UK GDPR.
This policy covers data processed by the FreeCamper Android application and by the backend service (a Cloudflare Worker) that the app calls. It does not cover:
Data collected by Google when you download or update the app from the Google Play Store (see Google's Privacy Policy).
Data collected by third-party services we link to (NOAA, USFS, NPS, etc.), if you visit their websites independently.
Any other app, website, or service operated by anyone else.
We collect only what we need to make the app work. Here is every category.
3.1 Location data
What: Your approximate geographic coordinates (latitude / longitude), accurate to within a few hundred meters or better depending on your device and the permission you grant (ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION or ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION).
How we get it: From your device's location services, using the Android FusedLocationProviderClient, only after you grant the permission. You can revoke the permission at any time in Android Settings → Apps → FreeCamper → Permissions.
Why we need it:
To center the map on where you are.
To rank campsites by distance from you.
To request weather, fire-risk, cell-coverage, elevation, sunrise/sunset, and noise data for the area you're looking at.
To check whether you can reach a campsite before sunset.
Who we send it to: The app sends your approximate coordinates to our Cloudflare Worker backend and, indirectly through that backend, to public data providers (NOAA, USGS, USFS / NIFC for fire, FCC for cell coverage, OpenCelliD, Overpass / OpenStreetMap for amenities, Open-Meteo for weather and elevation, and OpenFreeMap / MapLibre for basemap tiles). We round coordinates before sending them to certain third-party services to reduce precision where full precision is not needed (for example, OpenCelliD requests are rounded to roughly a 100-meter grid).
Retention: We do not store your location history on our servers. The backend logs each request for short-term operational debugging (typically retained for less than 30 days) and then deletes it. Cached responses are keyed by area, not by user.
3.2 Device and technical data
What: IP address, Android OS version, device model, app version, language, time zone, crash-and-error diagnostics, and standard HTTP request metadata (User-Agent, request time).
How we get it: Automatically when the app communicates with our backend or with third-party services.
Why: To operate the service, debug crashes and errors, prevent abuse (rate limiting, fraud detection), and understand which devices and OS versions to support.
Retention: Operational logs are kept for less than 30 days. Aggregated, non-identifying statistics may be kept longer.
3.3 Advertising data (via Google AdMob)
What: Your Android Advertising ID (a resettable per-device identifier), IP address, approximate location at the time the ad is served, device characteristics, and your interaction with ads (impressions, clicks). For users in jurisdictions that require it, you will be shown a consent prompt that determines whether you see personalized or non-personalized ads.
How we get it: The Google Mobile Ads SDK runs inside the app and communicates directly with Google.
Why: To show advertisements that help fund the free version of the app.
Who controls it: Google is the controller for the advertising data it collects through AdMob. We do not see, store, or have direct access to it. Their use of that data is governed by Google's Privacy Policy (https://policies.google.com/privacy) and the AdMob data-processing addendum.
Your choice: You can reset or limit your Android Advertising ID in Android Settings → Privacy → Ads. Premium subscribers do not see ads, so this category does not apply to them.
3.4 Purchase and subscription data (via Google Play Billing)
What: Purchase tokens, order IDs, subscription state (active / cancelled / expired), product purchased (monthly or annual), and the country your Play Store account is registered in.
How we get it: From the Google Play Billing Library when you start, cancel, or renew a subscription.
Why: To unlock premium features for users who have an active subscription, to honor cancellations, and to recover from network failures (so you don't lose access after a transient error).
What we do NOT collect: Your credit card number, billing address, or any other payment details. All payment processing is done by Google Play — we never see your card information.
Retention: Subscription state is checked on each app launch and is not stored on our servers; it lives inside the app's local storage and on Google's servers.
3.5 Push notification data (via Firebase Cloud Messaging)
What: An anonymous device push token issued by Firebase Cloud Messaging.
How we get it: Firebase generates it on first launch.
Why: To deliver push notifications for sunset alarms and other event-driven reminders you opt into (such as "you're due to arrive at your campsite in 30 minutes").
Your choice: You can turn off notifications in Android Settings → Apps → FreeCamper → Notifications. Doing so will not affect any other part of the app.
3.6 Data you choose to send us
What: Anything you put in an email, support request, refund request, arbitration opt-out notice, or other communication to walabokllc@gmail.com — including your email address, the contents of your message, and any attachments.
Why: To respond to you.
Retention: Kept for as long as needed to handle your request, then archived per our standard retention schedule (typically up to 24 months for support correspondence and longer for anything related to a legal matter, dispute, or arbitration).
3.7 Data stored only on your device
The following data lives on your phone only — we do not have a copy and cannot see it:
Your saved / favorite campsites
Your selected map theme
Your filter preferences
Your last viewed map area
Whether you've accepted the current Terms of Use
Whether you've completed the first-launch onboarding
Downloaded offline map regions
If you uninstall the app or clear its storage, this data is permanently lost from your device.
We want this to be explicit:
We do not collect your name, phone number, email address (unless you email us first), home address, age, gender, or any other personal identifier.
We do not access your contacts, calendar, photos, microphone, camera, or files.
We do not track which other apps you use or which websites you visit outside FreeCamper.
We do not collect biometric data (fingerprint, face, voice).
We do not sell your personal data to anyone, for any purpose.
We do not share your data with data brokers.
We do not use your data to train AI models.
We do not use the camera, microphone, or any other passive sensing.
Under the GDPR, we rely on the following legal bases for processing:
Performance of a contract (GDPR Article 6(1)(b)) for delivering the app's core functionality, processing your subscription, and providing support.
Legitimate interests (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)) for security, fraud prevention, debugging, rate limiting, and improving the service. We balance these interests against your rights and freedoms and limit collection to what is necessary.
Consent (GDPR Article 6(1)(a)) for personalized advertising and for any optional features that ask for explicit opt-in. You can withdraw consent at any time.
Compliance with a legal obligation (GDPR Article 6(1)(c)) where we are required to retain or disclose data by law.
We do not use any of your data for automated decision-making or profiling that produces legal or similarly significant effects.
We share data only with the parties listed below, and only for the purposes described.

If we merge with, are acquired by, or sell substantially all assets to another company, your data may transfer as part of that transaction
We do not share your data with advertisers (other than through AdMob's standard ad-serving pipeline), data brokers, marketing companies, social networks, or analytics providers other than what is listed here.
Walabok LLC is based in Texas, USA. Our backend runs on Cloudflare's global network, which means your data may be processed in any country where Cloudflare operates a data center. Many of the third-party APIs we call are also operated by US-based organizations.
If you are in the EU, UK, or EEA, your data may therefore be transferred to and processed in the United States and other countries that may not provide the same level of data-protection law as your home country. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards including the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) and the UK Addendum, and the providers we use (Google, Cloudflare) have their own SCCs and Data Processing Addenda in place.
You can request a summary of the safeguards we rely on by emailing walabokllc@gmail.com.
Approximate location coordinates sent to APIs: Not stored beyond the duration of the request and any short-term cache used to reduce upstream costs (typically minutes to hours).
Operational logs at the Cloudflare Worker: Less than 30 days.
Subscription state: Maintained by Google Play; checked on each app launch.
Push tokens: Until the app is uninstalled or notifications are disabled.
Support correspondence: Up to 24 months from the date of last contact, or longer if related to a legal matter.
Aggregated, de-identified statistics: May be kept indefinitely.
When data is no longer needed for the purposes above, we delete it or de-identify it.
We protect your data with industry-standard measures including:
HTTPS / TLS encryption for all network communication between the app, our backend, and third-party APIs.
Hardened Cloudflare Worker code with rate limiting, abuse detection, and least-privilege API key access.
Storage of API keys and secrets in encrypted environment configuration, never embedded in the app binary.
Limited access to operational systems on a need-to-know basis.
No security system is perfect, and no transmission over the internet can be guaranteed 100% secure. If a security incident affects your personal data, we will notify affected users and the relevant authorities within the timelines required by applicable law (for example, 72 hours under the GDPR).
FreeCamper is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child under 13 has provided us with personal data, contact us at walabokllc@gmail.com and we will delete it.
For users in the EU and UK, the minimum age is 16 unless your country has set a lower threshold consistent with Article 8 of the GDPR.
We do not knowingly process children's data in a way that would require compliance with COPPA's verifiable-parental-consent provisions.
Subject to applicable law, you have the following rights with respect to your personal data:
Right to access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
Right to correction — ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
Right to deletion / "right to be forgotten" — ask us to delete your personal data, subject to legal retention obligations.
Right to restriction — ask us to limit how we use your data.
Right to data portability — receive a copy of your data in a structured, machine-readable format.
Right to object — object to processing based on our legitimate interests, including direct marketing (we do not do direct marketing).
Right to withdraw consent — for any processing based on your consent, withdraw it at any time without affecting the lawfulness of prior processing.
Right to lodge a complaint — file a complaint with your local supervisory authority (for EU/EEA), the Information Commissioner's Office (UK), the California Privacy Protection Agency (CA), the Texas Attorney General (TX), or your state's equivalent.
To exercise any right, email walabokllc@gmail.com with the words "Privacy Request" in the subject line. We will respond within the time required by your jurisdiction's law — typically within 30 days under the GDPR and 45 days under the CCPA. We may ask for information to verify your identity before fulfilling a request. We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights.
Under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), California residents have specific rights described above and the additional disclosures below.
Categories of personal information collected in the last 12 months: Identifiers (Advertising ID, IP address, device ID, push token), commercial information (subscription purchase records), geolocation data (approximate location), internet activity (app interaction with ads and APIs).
Categories of sources: Directly from you, automatically from your device, from Google (AdMob, Play Billing, FCM).
Business or commercial purposes for collection: Operating the service, serving ads, processing subscriptions, delivering notifications, security and fraud prevention.
Categories of third parties with whom personal information is shared: Listed in Section 6 above.
Sale or sharing of personal information: We do not sell personal information as that term is defined in the CCPA, and we do not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. We therefore do not need a "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" link, but you may still email us to confirm this and to opt out of any future change.
Sensitive personal information: Approximate location can be considered sensitive personal information under California law. We use it only for the purposes disclosed in Section 3.1 and not for inferring characteristics about you.
Financial incentives: We do not offer financial incentives in exchange for personal information.
Right of authorized agents: You may designate an authorized agent to make a request on your behalf by providing written, signed authorization.
Under the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act (TDPSA), Texas residents have rights similar to those in Section 11 above, including the right to access, correct, delete, obtain a portable copy, and opt out of targeted advertising, the sale of personal data, and certain profiling. We do not engage in targeted advertising as defined by the TDPSA, do not sell personal data, and do not profile in furtherance of decisions producing legal or similarly significant effects.
To exercise your TDPSA rights, email walabokllc@gmail.com.
If we deny your request, you may appeal by replying to our denial within 60 days, and we will respond within 60 days of the appeal. If the appeal is denied, you may contact the Texas Attorney General to submit a complaint.
Residents of Virginia (VCDPA), Colorado (CPA), Connecticut (CTDPA), Utah (UCPA), and other states with comprehensive privacy laws have rights similar to those in Sections 11 and 13. You may exercise those rights by emailing walabokllc@gmail.com.
We do not sell personal data, do not engage in targeted advertising as defined by those laws, and do not conduct profiling that produces legal or similarly significant effects on you.
In addition to the rights in Section 11, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the supervisory authority in the EU member state of your habitual residence, place of work, or place of the alleged infringement, or with the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at https://ico.org.uk/.
We have not appointed an EU representative or UK representative at this time because our processing activities are not at the scale that triggers the GDPR Article 27 / UK GDPR Article 27 requirement. If that changes, we will update this policy.
The FreeCamper Android app itself does not use browser cookies. It does use:
Android SharedPreferences — to remember your settings and acceptance of Terms.
The Google Mobile Ads SDK — which uses identifiers (Advertising ID) and may store ad-related data locally.
The Google Play Billing Library — which caches subscription state.
MapLibre and the basemap tile cache — which stores recently-viewed map tiles locally so the app can work offline.
The third-party services we link to or proxy through may use cookies on their own websites. Their cookie use is governed by their own privacy policies.
Some browsers transmit a "Do Not Track" signal. Because FreeCamper is a mobile app and not a browser-based service, this signal does not apply to most of our processing. We honor your operating-system-level advertising-tracking controls (Android's "Opt out of Ads Personalization") and your in-app consent choices.
The app may link out to third-party websites, including the National Park Service, USFS, BLM, NOAA, weather.gov, your carrier's website, satellite-messenger services, and others. We are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of those sites. Review their privacy policies before providing any personal information to them.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make a material change, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top, post the new policy at https://sites.google.com/view/freecamprivacy/home, and — for changes that meaningfully expand the categories of data we collect or how we use them — prompt you for re-acceptance the next time you open the app. Continued use of the app after the change means you accept the updated policy.
Older versions of this policy are available by emailing walabokllc@gmail.com.
