28th April - Sedbergh

All walks are circular from Joss Lane car park in Sedbergh, LA10 5AS   Routes overview map

The A walk, led by Kenny, follows the River Rawthey NE, passing Ellerthwaite and Fawcett Bank to Cautley Beck. This section is reasonably flat, but might be boggy in places, depending on the weather. Turning NW it heads towards Cautley Spout, England's highest above ground waterfall of 650 ft down a cliff face in a series of cascades. The path to the top of the waterfall is well defined, but very steep.

From Cautley Spout, the route crosses a small stream via stones then follows it SW to Force Gill Beck, heading towards The Calf, the highest point in the Howgill Fells with excellent views to the Lakeland peaks and Yorkshire Three Peaks. The section from Cautley Spout to the Calf is rocky and wet in places due to the path running adjacent to a stream. Return to Sedbergh is S on the Dales High Way.
