Papelucho is a twelve book series written by the Chilean author Ester Huneeus, who goes by the pseudonym Marcela Paz. Between 1947 and 1974, the books were published, and they have since become a classic children's book in Chile.

I found the cultural readings to be random, incomprehensible for beginners, and irrelevant to chapter content. In addition, there are many examples of practice exercises that require students to know concepts not yet introduced or learned. The pre-chapter activities, for instance, ask students to do activities without any background information and little knowledge of the concepts. Concept introductions are sometimes too concise. They provide very minimal information and explanations and jump into activities without much support. Most content, though, is understandable and provide a lot of good practice activities.

This book can be used for two semesters. It covers all the basic grammar structures that other more expensive textbooks include, just in a slightly different order. It also covers other topics not usually included in the second semester of Spanish such as future or conditional tenses as well as an introduction to the subjunctive. The index is appropriate and complete although it only gives the titles of the cultural readings in the first two chapters. At the end of each chapter there is a glossary of all the vocabulary used in the lesson and it also includes a personalized empty glossary so that students can add the words that they found on their own or came up during the completion of the activities. I would like to see more recycling activities where students have to use previous studied points for reviewing purposes. This book would work better with face-to-face classes rather than online as there are no supplementary online activities. Overall, Libro Libre is a very comprehensive material for Spanish beginners.

The book is well organized and follows a typical two semester introductory course. One thing I noticed is that it covers the Imperfect tense before introducing the Preterit which is unusual in textbooks that I have used or I am currently using. Overall, I think the text has a consistent organization that is logical and clear.

I used this book for a Spanish 1 class and found it to cover what I would normally want to introduce to a beginners class. The glossary at the end was a good way to have students think on their own about the vocabulary before knowing the meanings. Compared to a non OER text, this was more comprehensive in how I would teach. I would add a note or tip for students and in the very next paragraph the author would explain/add essentially the same thing! So I think it's a great educators text. The book doesn't include any quiz, exam or review activity at the end of any chapter which would be nice to have.

Libro Libre is a great book for beginners and intermediate level students. As other textbooks, Libro Libre introduces new vocabulary and grammar as the chapters progress. In my opinion, the explanations of the grammar are clear and relevant. The text has good activities for practicing the new grammar points and using the new vocabulary. I really like that there are many activities where students can personalize their participation. Libro Libre has audio and video features and has beautiful illustrations in all the chapters. However, I think that the book does not have many activities that would help students with their reading and writing skills. A very important point of this book is that in each chapter students need to set their personal objectives. Likewise, the author establishes the outcomes for each chapter. Finally, at the end of each chapter there is the vocabulary for the chapter and an empty page where students can personalize their own vocabulary.

Libro Libre is a great effort to try to do something different. It is a good alternative in a world where the books are becoming so expensive and are affecting our students. In my opinion Libro Libre is a good material for the students and the instructors because it covers the main grammar points and vocabulary that is needed to start learning the language. It also have good activities to practice the language. This book is not perfect, but I believe there is no perfect book. This book can be adapted or modified by instructors according the student or instructor needs. Also it can be supplemented with other materials.

Libro Libre does not present any accuracy problem, on the contrary I think it can be used from beginners to intermediate level students. The materials presented are suitable for these levels as well as the objectives presented in each chapter. I have observed that the authors have an important knowledge about the Hispanic world. The book is not only accurate, it's very effective.

The text is presented clearly for students and teachers in the formulation of the grammar suitable for beginners without making an extraordinary use of language jargon, but introducing some concepts necessary to understand the notions presented.

The presentation of the activities is clear so that even the students can use the book independently.

I really enjoyed going through the whole book "Libro Libre". It is a very complete book for beginners. It is an accessible book for the students because it has clear and colorful illustrations, basic vocabulary using a good number of cognates and also basic sentences which helps students to improve their pace. Besides, the author includes some translation whenever it is considered necessary. The way the author organizes the book is just perfect for the students to reflect on the objectives and goals that they need to reach in each chapter. At the end of each chapter not only there is a space to review the vocabulary studied in the chapter, but also there is a place for the students to reflect about the vocabulary that they have gained. I like the fact that the book has a good variety of easy and well illustrated cultural readings. The grammar portions are very well explained and there are plenty of activities for the students to practice. I also like the audio and video pieces that the student can use for extra practice.
